IC: Gritty Fate

So, I've been liking me some Fate, but wanted to try it with a bit more 'realism.'

Yeah, I know that's a dirty word when talking about Fate, but I've seen plenty of discussions online to know there are others who would also enjoy that sort of thing, so I thought I would check here to see if there's any interest in that sort of thing on RPOL.

I'd be messing with the 'dials' a little to see if I can invoke the right feel for the game.

Specifically, you'd have 3 aspects instead of 5, 2 Refresh, and a +3 skill pyramid.  You'd still have 3 Stunts.  Stress and consequences would be unchanged, but we would be using weapon and armor ratings.

I'm flexible on the setting but was considering a standard fantasy game, something zombies, or something post apocalyptic.

Any takers?

In reply to baxtheslayer (msg # 1):

I'd be interested in the standard fantasy game.

I will do anything to learn FATE-- can't seem to get into a game here that doesn't fall apart. I played Spirit of the Century a decade ago, but will be pretty new to the current edition. And I like "gritty"! My first choice is post apocalyptic, but I see the consensus forming for fantasy, and I am fine with that.

I've tried zombies apocalypse in fate before and it didn't work, but I think that was because people ghosted too quickly. I have what I think is a neat set of Homebrew rules that I would be happy to show you if you are interested.

Yeah, I've seen several games for different systems I wanted to play pop up on here but they never seem to pan out.  My weekly group is all about pathfinder so I like playing pretty much anything else when I get the chance.

A couple of caveats:

I'd like to set the game to Adult (it won't be constant, but there will be moments beyond Mature).

When I say Gritty Fate + standard fantasy I'm thinking somewhere between DnD, Conan, and Game of Thrones.  Swords are sharp and Dragons are scary.  Magic is real but will probably be more like witchcraft and ritual than fireballs and +1 swords.

Trying to stick as close to core as possible - just messing with dials and adversaries - right now, LordIce, but I'm always interested in hacks and such.  PM or rMail me.

Do the number of aspects and skills really change the "grittiness" of the game?  Would it be more productive to manage the scope and scale of what skills and aspects can accomplish?

That's what I'd like to find out.

Though, based on my experience with vanilla Fate, I believe so.  I find characters are able to overcome pretty high opposition with the resources they have.

Weapon ratings should up the lethality, lower Refresh will reduce Fate points available, lower Skills will reduce overall capability and less Aspects will limit options.  I think these changes will lead to more failures or success at a cost, which will lend a 'desperate' feel to the game.

Often, campaign worlds have one or more featured aspects all their own. For example, if you were playing a western game you might choose "Civilization means corruption." If you were playing a zombie game, "The dead can't be trusted." For a gritty game, I'm sure the GM would be able to come up with something that encapsulates an aspect of the world they want to create.

I was waiting to see if there was more interest, but I can run for three if that's all we get.
