Chaos 40k Powered by the Apocalypse
Heh, funny that you say that.
Recently finished reading the Night Lords Omnibus, and that was my first thought about running a game of a warband of Lords seeking to pull down the Imperium while trying to avoid being drawn too far down into the depths of the Ruinous Powers.
I found the most interesting thing to be how they despised the Imperium, that they can do as they wish in terms of tearing it down because they bled and their brothers died to build it but at the same time Talos’ humanity (however damaged) shows through. They know the Imperium is sick, as they knew their home world was when the Night Haunter ordered it destroyed. It is therefore, to their minds, justified in destroying it and getting vengeance for the murder of their Primarch Father.
The novels would definitely be how I wanted to approach the characters. Some may be feeling the draw to Chaos more than others as Uzas felt drawn to Khorne increasingly. And while they can be despicable, they don’t see themselves that way. They aren’t evil for evils sake, they don’t twirl their mustaches and speak a soliloquy like a Bond villain. They are fallen heroes who were once, when they were mortal, criminals and are now trying to live up to what they think Curze wanted them to be.
They raid where they can, take on serfs that benefit their goals. They are above mortals, but humanity is not there just to be killed or thrown ahead as fodder except limited use to spread fear in pursuit of their objectives- unlike the Black Legion and Word Bearers.
And they are not at all hesitant to ruin another Chaos Legions/warbands day, kill them, or take what they need.
