Chaos 40k Powered by the Apocalypse

Hail,

I was considering running a Warhammer 40k Chaos focused game using a fan-made Powered by the Apocalypse rules set. It’s a fairly easy system, but there are a ton of character options. Seeing if there was interest in a warband type game or one focusing on a specific Legion.

It would be the second game I’ve run of this system, the first had a fallen Inquisitor as the ‘protagonist’ so I know it is fairly easy to re-skin the Chaos Marine focused playbooks- the Inquisitor was a Sorcerer playbook.

Any ideas or concepts I’m willing to consider.

I'd be interested in this. I'm a fan of both the FFG 40K RPG and PbtA so this is especially intriguing.

Awesome, Ghost.

Do you think a warband style approach would work better, or a specific legion. Legion could be more cohesive thematically, but warband would allow for a wider variety of characters. Both have their advantages, imo.

I think you'll get more people interested in a Warband. I'd be the exception to that though - Alpha Legion or Night Lords.

If you get the interest needed I have am idea for a character.

Chaos 40k Powered by the Apocalypse

Heh, funny that you say that.

Recently finished reading the Night Lords Omnibus, and that was my first thought about running a game of a warband of Lords seeking to pull down the Imperium while trying to avoid being drawn too far down into the depths of the Ruinous Powers.

I found the most interesting thing to be how they despised the Imperium, that they can do as they wish in terms of tearing it down because they bled and their brothers died to build it but at the same time Talos’ humanity (however damaged) shows through. They know the Imperium is sick, as they knew their home world was when the Night Haunter ordered it destroyed. It is therefore, to their minds, justified in destroying it and getting vengeance for the murder of their Primarch Father.

The novels would definitely be how I wanted to approach the characters. Some may be feeling the draw to Chaos more than others as Uzas felt drawn to Khorne increasingly. And while they can be despicable, they don’t see themselves that way. They aren’t evil for evils sake, they don’t twirl their mustaches and speak a soliloquy like a Bond villain. They are fallen heroes who were once, when they were mortal, criminals and are now trying to live up to what they think Curze wanted them to be.

They raid where they can, take on serfs that benefit their goals. They are above mortals, but humanity is not there just to be killed or thrown ahead as fodder except limited use to spread fear in pursuit of their objectives- unlike the Black Legion and Word Bearers.

And they are not at all hesitant to ruin another Chaos Legions/warbands day, kill them, or take what they need.

Chaos 40k Powered by the Apocalypse

Hello,
I would be interested in playing. I think either warband or Legion would be interesting in their own way. I read the night Lord's Omnibus as well and I think that they're a bunch of doofuses and losers dressing themselves up in the guise of evil Batman. So, sure, if we're going to be night Lords that would be fine with me.

I think the Night Lords are more fun as complete nihilists. A blood spattered Batman isn't very much fun, really. But a Legion of angry ubermensch dedicated to the notion that nothing's worth saving are truly entertaining and scary.

In a mixed warband they are a powerful weapon but almost as dangerous to the warband itself as anybody else. I think that's where the real entertainment value of a Night Lord in a game like this would lie.

Edit: Typo.

I have not played with that system but it is on my list a bit of tactical story play might be a ton of fun with a system like that.

If it gets off the ground message me with the link.

Chaos 40k Powered by the Apocalypse

I think, that with a PbtA hack, tactical play may turn out much more like Apocalypse World - in that it is narrative and detailed tactical play isn't part of it.

With Black Crusade games (and any 40K chaos story) it's far more about temptation, planning, working angles and sowing sedition, doubt, corruption and heresy. Barring a true Black Crusade with millions of corrupt souls all streaming out of the Warp lead by a daemon-prince, cults are going to have to be far more social, subtle and careful. All of which, frankly, make playing a Legionnaire REALLY interesting - because nothing they're good at is even a little bit helpful most of the time.
