FATE Test Drive

Checking to see if anyone would help me try out FATE for the first time.

I'm a long time GM: I've run DnD, WoD, Shadowrun, Star Wars, and others.  I've only used RPoL once before, for a Vampire game that went pretty well IMO.

I've been reading FATE and I'd like to try it out, so I was hoping to find 3-5 people willing to do a short game with me.

I'd be running, and would like to go all the way through game creation, character creation, and one or two adventures to see the system in action.  I'd like to see what the players will bring to the table through their Aspects and such, see what things people latch on to and what they overlook, get a feel for Challenges and Conflict, and so on.

As for genre and setting, I'm partial to science fantasy, but I'm fine with standard fantasy, space opera, cyberpunk, urban fantasy, or whatever.

FATE Test Drive

In reply to baxtheslayer (msg # 1):

I'm comparatively new to Fate myself.  Are you looking for a long-term game here, or just a design exercise and test?  I could probably help with that.

Quickly, if you haven't gone to:

https://fate-srd.com/

you might want to.  A lot of Fate resources are there for free viewing online.  One in particular you may want to look at is Fate Toolkit.

What sort of milieu were you thinking of, and how rapid a post rate?  (I could see a fairly rapid rate when first getting started...)

Regards,
D

FATE Test Drive

In reply to baxtheslayer (msg # 1):

There are something like forty FATE Worlds Of Adventure that are pay-what-you-want on DriveThruRPG, if you want a quick setting for a game. Completely worth it to look through them and take inspiration where you will.

Looking forward to learn Fate by being part of a game from the very start.

FATE Test Drive

Well, I don't envision the game going much farther than one or two adventures, maybe 5 to 10 good scenes depending on how comprehensive they are.  Less, if it is taking too long due to the medium we're using.  Though, if we're all having fun...

I actually have, and have read through, FATE Core, the FATE System Toolkit, and the FATE Adversary Toolkit.

And, yes, I was hoping for people who could post pretty quickly in the beginning.  I don't know what's normal, but I ran a game on here once before and I felt like it bogged down pretty badly if they weren't checking back at least every other day.

There's also the possibility of finding a day when most of the players are reasonably free and banging out the setting and character details all at once.

FATE Test Drive

So, since it's relevant to the design phase of the game, should we discuss preferences for settings here?  Anything even remotely science-fictional would be fine with me, and if the rest of the group wanted something more fantastical, well, I'll adapt.

I'm down with the idea of going through game design, character design, the full Magilla, as that sounds like a great way to learn the system.

FATE Test Drive

I'd say it's best to establish the basics of the genre and setting here, since it's the first thing that could be a dealbreaker.

Someone who adamantly refuses to play any character other than a belligerent, bare-chested barbarian with the word "Slayer" tattooed on his forehead probably wouldn't want to join us for a cyberpunk game that unfolded within a virtual reality housed on a satellite orbiting a dying planet.

Of course, if anybody feels sufficiently flexible that they'd be willing to play to matter what sort of setting the group cooked up, let me know and I'll put you on the list.

We'll work on the specifics more once we've got people on board for the basic premise.  Fleshing out peoples, places, naming things, and all that.

FATE Test Drive

I'm open on setting and interested.

You might want to check out Masters of Umdaar. Fate science fantasy that draws from Flash Gordon and Thundarr the Barbarian.

Science fantasy encompasses quite a bit... did you have anything particular in mind? Steampunk? Dieselpunk? Planetary romance? What about for space opera and urban fantasy? (Those three would be my genre preferences.)

Re: FATE Test Drive

While I'm not against steampunk or dieselpunk, I don't think I have the knowledge or mindset to do such a game justice.

As for other science fantasy, I'm a big fan of anything over-the-top like Metabarons, 40k, Chronicles of Riddick, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy, John Carter, and so on.

And, yes, Masters of Umdaar is a good one.

In the space opera vein, I've enjoyed Star Wars, Dune, The Fifth Element, Valerian, Titan A.E., Treasure Planet, Killjoys, and others.

As for urban fantasy, I suppose I mean anything contemporary with fangs.  World of Darkness, Supernatural, Constantine (actually, both the movie and the series), The Dresden Files, The Magicians, etc.

Those are my preferences, but I'm not the only one with a vote.

I'll make the game and send out the first invites tomorrow.

Re: FATE Test Drive

I'm open to all proposals WRT genre, but in general I would like to avoid Adult or Mature flags. I have almost thrice the legal age, so that's not the issue, but I prefer games that are potentially open to everyone.

Re: FATE Test Drive

It won't venture into Adult territory, simply because I ain't great at romance in my games.

As for Mature, it depends on the genre.  Anything I run will probably involve violence, and there could certainly be sex, drugs, torture, or suicide depending on the mood of the game.  I doubt I'd get into long, graphic descriptions of any of it but you might see a single line explaining a visceral death.

If we're just doing some light space opera it'll probably look like Star Wars, Chronicles of Riddick, Fifth Element, or Valerian.  If we're doing some dark, contemporary fantasy it'll probably look like Supernatural or 300.  But it won't be Saw.  Never Saw.

Re: FATE Test Drive

Seems like enough we've got enough players to get started.  Anyone that said they were interested should have been added now.
