D&D Basic 5E

Hello,

Seeing if there is interest in using the basic (free) D&D 5E rules to run through an adventure. I’m interested in seeing if I want to buy the books as a primarily DM/GM and I want to see if it is a fit for me. I already have one player interested, to play an Archer specialist Fighter.

Please let me know, if I can get 2-3 additional players I’ll run an adventure with an option to possibly continue if everyone enjoys it.

I was just recently in a basic 5E game that has officially died. What sort of posting rate would you be looking to have?

I am looking to keep it to the four classes in the Basic book, if things go well and proceeds to the full version, of course the stuff in the 5E PHB would of course be useable.

I'll join in. One thing you might want to consider is all of the stuff that WotC has officially made available for free on their website -- all of it is technically free to use, so it could be included with the Basic Rules.

Heck, the campaign book Princes of the Apocalypse accounts for the possibility that it's being run with nothing more than the Basic Rules.

As is the case with me. what was your desired posting rate?

If it helps you, consider reading the srd which contains even more material from the PHB.

In reply to LunarKitty (msg # 7):

Wow, thanks for mentioning that LunarKitty! Definitely will use that too to try the system out.

In terms of posting, once a day would be preferable, but not limited to only once. And no one should feel they have to post in a non-combat situation if it’s a puzzle/trap/social encounter and you don’t have anything to contribute that’s ok, but I’d encourage players to.

Once a day especially becomes important for combat so it doesn’t drag out too long. I probably will say once it is your turn in combat you have 24 hours or your character is on hold and moves down the initiative order. That way you don’t loose your turn, but it also does not bog down the encounter.

For those who have played it online, does that sound like the best way to do it?

For that sort of pace in combat, I highly recommend full disclosure -- let us know in advance the defenses and hit points of our enemies, so that we can figure out the results of our actions when we post. End each combat post with a list that has everyone (in order of initiative), and their stats, and let each person copy the list to reflect changes.

If everyone is posting frequently enough, you can run combat using strict initiative order, and let each person copy-paste the updated list at the end, so that the next person to go has the current state of the battle.

This is my preferred method for running combat here now, regardless of game system.

Re: D&D Basic 5E

I'd recommend dropping initiative order for players. Instead, do players then npcs. This allows you to get all players to post for the round in one or two days. Much much faster than waiting on specific individuals.

It is rare that player actions will conflict based posting order, on those occasions, then you can just use initiative to resolve those conflicts on the rare cases theh do show up.

Re: D&D Basic 5E

Ok, I’ve had a chance to look over the SRD and I’ll be using it as well as the Basic stuff to run an adventure. I’ll get the game set-up tonight and post a link here. Thanks to everyone who’s given input, advice, and information.
