In the beginning, magic was the one thing that all races had in common. It's use was so widespread and prolific that some considered it as an extension of them selves, rather than the external force that it was. Then, Twelve hundred years ago, everything changed. Accounts vary as to what actually happened: a spell gone awry, an evil warlock's revenge, punishment from the gods themselves. Whatever the reason, the result was clear: a massive magical explosion that decimated millions and irradiated the planet.

The only known survivors were the inhabitants of the city of Devlan, a massive underground city state populated with Humans, dwarves, elves, halflings, half elves, and a very small population of tieflings. For the next twelve hundred years, the city remained cut off, underground, unaware of the world above.

Recently, crime in the city has been on the rise, and thus, to better protect the now rapidly shrinking population, the city council has implement a new penalty for any crime: Death, by banishment to the surface world. What no one knows is that the world above is no longer unlivable.

And something has survived. Something is thriving. Something... Is hungry
