While not happening in the Marvel Universe, it is based on the system.  This is a SuperHero game in a universe where Superheros do not exist.

Each time that a person is born into this world, strands of astral energy form through that person's sentience.  The effect is that there can never be less Astral energy at any given time, in our world.  When a thousand people die, that energy spreads out through births or barely noticable increases in physical or mental attribute amongst a number of people in proximity to those deaths.  However, when tens of thousands, or millions die, the number of survivors in proximity is often not enough to adapt to the increase in astral energy.  This is especially true if there is a single survivor.

Your powers developed because you were the sole survivor in a disaster on earth.  The excess astral energy, lacking conduits of sentience to escape from, pushed through you in the same way that water pressure increases when you squeeze a hose.  This is the source of your power.  What happened?

October 31st, 2016, a meteor of unknown origin was slungshot around our sun at such a velocity that it wreaked havoc on our planet as it passed within a few hundred kilometers of our atmosphere.  From space, a funnel like effect was visible as a huge chunk of the earth's atmosphere was pulled with the comet.  Seismic activity caused by the proximity created super volcanos, earthquakes, and many other natural phenomena.  There is a plethora of potential causes for your enhancements.

Also, in your background story, I ask that you express your felt emotions at the loss of friends and loved ones, and how that affected your outlook on life in general.

how would this work, are they all put together on some other planet?

No.  The planet is fine, humans survive as do nations.  But there were several catastrophes in which tens/hundreds of thousands of people simply died.  So far there's a county in England where a seismic event destroyed the entire county, save a sole survivor (CAD accepted).  Then there's a portion of California which dropped off the face of the planet killing nearly a million people in that area (CAD accepted).

Just fine your catastrophe, how you were involved with that area, and tell the story.  It will be my job to connect the characters, but the initial part of the game will actually be a re-telling of each person's story, how they reacted/adapted to these strange powers, along with the emotional trauma brought along with it.  Each person's story begins alone (unless multiple applicants drew upon the same calamity, such as if other people were also on that California coast area).
