[Echoes of Defiance] Free-form Space Opera

When the ship arrived in orbit around the Earth colony world of Sagan it was universally seen as a godsend. Whether that god was benevolent or vengeful had yet to be determined...

More than three years ago, in the year 2113, the gate that connected Earth to its 47th colony world closed. Though the colony itself would survive, basic necessities like food and shelter could be addressed indefinitely, there would be no replacement parts for complex electronics and machinery, no additional fuel for their lone low orbital spacecraft, and no modern treatments for injury and disease. The colonists of Sagan were looking at a dark age that would set them back 200 years.

So when the mysterious ship arrived in orbit, directly above the colony, the colonists could have been forgiven for exploring the 2 kilometer long vessel with less caution than might otherwise have been warranted. Every step of the way, from getting inside to opening doors to turning on the lights was a struggle, but as the days turned to weeks the colonists charged with understanding the ship began to realize that the ship was changing; was trying to find a way to communicate with them. The chemical makeup of the atmosphere started to change, as did the spectrum of light used by the ship's illumination system. When a script of alien looking text became rough, if recognizable English, the colonists began to hope that this could be their salvation.

The discovery of the bridge was a cause for celebration, but also a turning point for the colonists. The fuel utilized by their own ship was almost expended, and the alien ship still contained vastly more mysteries than answers. But on a large screen in the center of the bridge was a display showing an Earth-like world with the text "hope" and "defiance" next to it. The message was maddening vague, but the decision still had to be made. Would the colonists remain on Sagan and hope the connection to Earth would reopen, or would they chain their fate to this unusual ship and it's promises?

In the end, they compromised. 5000 people were required for a genetically stable population, and if Sagan was the last pocket of humanity in the universe the species would survive. That left 528 men and women to board the strange vessel and travel where it took them; searching for hope and fearing what might be amongst the stars that demanded their defiance.

Echoes of Defiance is a free-form RPG on Roleplay Online. The world is a collaboration of several members of the community, and the story one with a distinct destination but a path chosen by the players. It is a science fiction setting best described as Space Opera, but close enough to the modern age to share the same basic structure as life today. It is a journey that will cross many worlds and conclude with the fate of all humanity in the balance.

Re: [Echoes of Defiance] Free-form Space Opera

We have a handful of players and a handful of lurkers, and with the holiday weekend past I'm about to introduce the first major story events.

There's plenty of room for new players and getting new characters added to the narrative is still simple and easy.

The initial conflicts are starting to be revealed and there are still plenty of ways for new characters to join in.
