Steampunk Quest

Gears and Portals is a steampunk style game.

Currently hosting 6 active Players

Tone: Serious/Humorous (a little bit of both)
GM: A [preferred] plot point is known, but how [or if] the players get there is up to them.
Campaign Options: Hooks and Tales, Pumping Clichés, Double Pumps, Lucky Shots
Points/Dice: 10 Dice
Description: In a city in between the worlds, Magic and Technology collide to create opportunity for adventures.

Not familiar with Risus? No problem. Ask any question you like, or freeform and I'll guide you into the system, or help you ignore it.

In the city of Portcullis, an unlikely band of adventurers work mostly together as they seek to fulfill Synthia's last request.

Synthia gathered together many adventurers on a quest to save a little girl named Auricle. Synthia died tragically, trying to get to Auricle.

The game is a sandbox. There are many quests you can participate in, but none that you are required to do so. You can have a solo adventure, or join a group and travel with other players.

Abandoned characters may become NPCs to facilitate continuity. A character shall be considered abandoned if the player does not log in for 1 month. I am happy to change the name and description in such cases if requested. Such characters may always be reclaimed, or adjusted by their creators in any way, including removal from the game.

Sample
quote:
((everyone now in the common room))
Empowered Scilick (7/7) +20d6, +35, reroll 1s, reroll 20 dice, damage proportional to roll ratio

14:42, Today: Scilick rolled 168 using 47d6+35, dropping the 20 lowest rolls, rerolling ones.  Against Synthia.

Damage caused: up to 9

Sprocket burst into the room, the others right behind him.

Scilick grabbed her by the hair, holding his charged Dagger to her throat, he shouted, "Leave her with me, and escort yourselves out. She's paid you, hasn't she?" Two more arms unfolded from his side, grabbed his guns, and pointed them, one at the door, one at Serafina.

Sprocket snarled, his steel hackles rose, he bared his titanium plated teeth and barked, "Let her go! We already know where Auricle is, you can't stop us from getting there now! It's pointless!"

Scilick tilted his head to the side, and whispered, "You're bluffing." He tightenned his grip on her hair and the dagger, then he shouted, "I said LEA-"

He was cut short by a laser blast to his Dagger arm. The distraction had worked. His Dagger arm flew away from her, and he quickly ducked behind the wall. The team jumped into action, preparing to battle Scilick and the guards.

Unfortunately, he had already made his cut. Synthia was bleeding out. Scilick tossed an orb toward her. He taunted, "Save yourself." The orb landed directly in front of her.

Synthia fumbled for the button on the orb. Life as a machine may not be her choice, but it was better than the alternative. She pressed the button she knew she'd find. Hundreds of metal legs sprung from the orb.

But it did not do what it was meant to do. It did not grasp her head. It did not upload her consciousness. It quivered. Synthia's heart gave up. Everything went black.

Re: Seeking players

Synthia has hired a Clockwork Robot Dog, Demolitions Expert, a Swordsman named Gene, a Rogue named Hop, and an Engineer. Together they are transporting a valuable magic item onboard a giant mechanical centipede.

The bomb has wrecked the Scuttlebus, and now there is a herd of Bayore stampeding into the area.

Re: Seeking players

After the Bayors were defeated, the Alpha Bayore ended up tagging along with the party. They travelled through the woods and met up with a corporeal tree spirit to whom Synthia sold the item they had been carrying with them (a Lifetree seed). They obtained information about where to find Auricle, and so are back in Portcullis, leaving at sunrise.

Re: Seeking players

Hop and Gene went to find salvage, with Andria following unseen. But they ended up caught in the middle of a battle between a downed merchant Guardswoman Airship, and the pirates who shot them down. Two recently defeated enemies (Scilick and Pliff) have come back to hunt Hop and Gene. Meanwhile Mik the Ferret has shown up on the scene, and he too is helping out.

Re: Seeking players

After the group had collected their loot and rewards from the pirates they had caught and killed, Andria stole from one of the crewwomen, and as punishment her hands were chopped off. However, the crew felt bad for her punishment, and gave her hands which were even more powerful than those she had been born with.

The group then decided to seek out more scavenge, and have headed over to the crash site of Hell Froze Over

Re: Seeking players

The ship, Hell Froze Over paid out well in salvage, and the crew decided to spend the night in a fancy hotel.

Re: Seeking players

The next day they all went to the Skyport to board Synthia's ship: Synthetic Happiness. The airship took off for Aetheria, and was attacked by pirates over Air Zenjin territory. Fortunately one of the pirates betrayed them, and the coastguards of the sky were nearby. The crew was mostly unharmed, and welcomed their new friend, a Skeksi known as Engineer, AKA Skekeng. They landed in the city of Datokojima, and spent the night in a hotel.

Re: Seeking players

Is this the kind where magic and tech do or don't mix?

Re: Seeking players

In reply to Azraile (msg # 17):

Magic and Tech mix throughout this cosmos, but also don't mix. Electrical circuitry fries in the presence of magic, and magic is almost everywhere. As a result, most technologies are developed through some hybridization of magic and clockwork, and steam power. Nevertheless, a clever engineer who shuns all magical items and artifacts could easily best an experienced Shard mancer who ignores all technology. Magic is not overpowered.

Of course, the balanced player who accepts both technological advantages as well as magical ones, could easily find themselves a match for either the mancer or the engineer. This is not a rock, paper, scissors system. It could be, if the player made a good enough argument for it, but it currently isn't.
