Star Trek: Hyperion

Disclaimer:

I’ve tried running games here before and each failed because, frankly, I lost all interest.  I suspect that happened because I chose to run games my heart wasn’t in.  Apply with that in mind.  Having said that, as a huge Star Trek fan and a huge FFG SWRPG fan, I’m confident that this game will be different.  Plus, having a few failures under your belt helps as well in terms of what to expect not only from myself but players as well.

The Game:

We will use the Star Wars Edge of the Empire / Age of Rebellion / Force & Destiny rules.  Where necessary we’ll rename, reflavor or remove aspects of the game that don’t fit inside the Star Trek universe.  Note:  If you don't have the books I can help you build a character.

Players can, if they wish, create two characters; one senior officer and one junior officer or noncom.  The reason for this is that I’d like this game to feature a wide range of characters to help flesh out the crew and also because I can’t realistically create situation after situation where the counselor (or any position really) has a logical reason to be involved in absolutely every scene.  If you make the ship’s chief medical officer it might be a good idea to make a low-ranking security officer to better cover your bases.

Even with two characters there are still no guarantees.  I will do my best to be as inclusive as possible but part of your responsibility is working yourself into the scene or creating an entirely new one.  If neither of your characters are on the bridge or the away team or what have you, go to the mess hall, the arboretum, or you name it.  The ship is a small city flying through space there are always things you can be doing even if you’re not marooned on the surface of some hellish planet trying to figure out how to get back to the ship.  Help make the ship feel real and populated by more than a handful of bridge personnel.  (The TNG episode “Lower Decks” is a great example of this.)  Take the initiative and involve yourself in the game.

The Setting:

16 years ago the Dominion War came to an end.  The tenth anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Bajor saw the Cardassian Union’s sovereignty restored.  An agreement with the Federation Alliance sees the Federation and the Klingon Empire maintain two starbases each in four key sectors of the Union.  Two other bases were administered by the Romulans who had to pull their resources following the destruction of Romulus.

The demilitarized zone has been dissolved.  Colonies that changed hands as a result of the Federation-Cardassian Treaty of 2370 were returned.  Former chairman of the Detapa Council, Elim Garak, expended a great deal of political capital to ensure that the Council approved his plan to return the colonies and establish a joint Federation-Cardassian-Ferengi trade and diplomatic station in the—now defunct—DMZ.  Trade at the station has helped the Cardassian rebuilding effort, which still continues, greatly.

The Breen Confederacy completely collapsed following the war resulting is a failed state and massive loss of life due to a breakdown of even the most basic social services.  The surviving Breen rely almost totally on Federation Aid.  Breen warships that escaped disarmament have turned to piracy and mercenarism, many of which have aligned themselves with the Orion Syndicate.

It has been 12 years since the Romulan Praetor and senate were assassinated and 4 years since the Hobus Supernova destroyed Romulus and Remus.  Praetor Donatra, who was off Romulus at the time of its destruction, has struggled to maintain the empire without its core worlds.  A civil war has raged for years as several former senators jockey for power though Starfleet believes the victory of the Praetor’s forces is inevitable within 6 months.

While the official position of the Klingon High Council is that the Klingon and Romulan empires have a truce, various Klingon houses conduct raids into Romulan space.  It is widely believed that the rogue senators are each employing Klingon houses to wage a proxy war.  The Klingon raids have strained the alliances the Federation has with the Klingons and the Romulans.

Further straining the Federation Romulan alliance is that the Federation has been providing humanitarian aid to all sides of the conflict.  At the behest of Ambassador Picard, the Federation Council agreed that providing aid to each Romulan faction would satisfy the Prime Directive.

The year is 2391 and Starfleet has returned its attention to exploration and discovery.  You are a crewmember of the Luna-class USS Hyperion.  Her ongoing mission; to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Re: Star Trek: Hyperion

After an admittedly rocky start, we're in need of some new officers.  We currently have a first officer and chief of security.  Other than that, we're wide open.
