They had put speakers up on the railing; the same railing where they'd wrapped barbwire so we couldn't climb out, and stationed snipers on platforms so we couldn't cross. As long as people were bleeding from their gums, the whites of their eyes turning yellow, their teeth frothing with uncontrollable rage; as long as there was something to "protect" us from, protect us they would.

The first few weeks were a bit creepy, to say the least. But we got used to it, the way a dog gets used to being on a leash when he walks. It's those speakers...those goddamn speakers, playing the same message, over and over, every hour. The same words. The same words. That's what drives a man mad.

"Welcome to Grand Island. Whether you are tourists from Niagara Falls, or you've lived here all your life, or whether you've even been relocated from another cordon, we give to you the same message: be informed that we are not protecting the outside world from you. We are protecting you from the outside world.

"Do not try to escape by boat. Do not try to approach the bridge. We have direct orders to shoot any troublemakers, so if you are smart, you'll act as you always have. Do not endanger your life, and the lives of your families, by misbehaving.

"Because even if we forgive you, the plague won't."

To the people who were accepted in this game, for some reason I was kicked from viewing Adult content. Since I'm reasonably certain I was born on Feb. 2, 1994, in the United States (where the age of consent is 18), I'm in the process of trying to straighten this out.
