DnD 5e: Flames of Expansion

Gareth, the youngest son of Duke Harodel of Greenvale, has finally come of age.  While the duchy has celebrated for the past week as tradition dictates, it is no secret that Gareth is not well-favored by his father and much of the celebration has been wanting.  The feasts have been normal fare from the surrounding area instead of the lavish affairs of his elder brothers and sisters; no craftsmen from beyond its borders were contracted for the gifts of his adulthood; and no guests from neighboring lands have come to visit and pay homage.

On the last day of the 'festivities', Duke Harodel added one final veiled insult to his son.  Instead of granting him lands in or near the duchy, as was done with his siblings, Gareth was granted the title Count of Ferromar.  Technically land still granted to the family by the Emperor, this particular area has been overrun by orcs and goblins for over three hundred years.  Most view it as a worthless title for a son not quite shameful enough to be disowned.

However, Gareth is determined to make the best of it.  While currently in the process of wheedling gold and supplies out of his kin, the young noble has already begun contracting mercenaries and what few people are loyal to him in an attempt to reclaim that territory.

For whatever reason (fame, fortune, power, pity), you have accepted the call put out by Gareth S'Harodel for adventurers to help reclaim the lands of Ferromar.  While he curries favor with his family and gets the resources to civilize the land, a small party will go in to begin removing some of the more hostile elements from the area.

(This is a level one game using DnD Next.)
