Lords & Ladies

To my dearest subjects...

Reveille is a prosperous kingdom, despite the Succession War that saw the brothers William and Morgan fight for the crown, with the younger ultimately winning kingship. The war divided the kingdom's most powerful families, and those who committed ignoble acts were stripped of their titles, though not all who sided against Morgan were punished. Instead, he foresaw the long years of cultivating peace and trust among ruptured alliances, and forgave those who laid down their weapons.

Deep is the bitter well of memory, however, and despite King Morgan’s diplomatic attempts, Reveille’s nobles remain virulently at each other’s throats even now, twenty years later. The reasons are many, for some vendettas stem from long before the war.

That would be worrying enough for any monarchy, but that is not the end of Reveille’s concerns. War ships from the Min-Yao Empire have been spotted off the coast, and spies whisper they will be invaded if Reveille cannot present a united front. The time to build on a foundation of respect is no longer viable. Not when strife and petty squabbles threaten to tear the kingdom apart.

Thus, King Morgan has called upon a custom which hasn’t been enacted for a century; all nobles are bound to the Betrothal Covenant, a custom used by the kings past to control his subjects. Normally, the Covenant means the King can choose who his nobles marry, but in this situation, he is giving them an option; accept who he chooses, or go to the Chevalier Monastery and choose for themselves. But by by the first snowfall of winter, all scions of the noble houses must be wed, for a Min-Yao envoy will arrive in the spring under the guise of friendly relations. If Reveille cannot resolve their differences, an invasion is all but guaranteed… and it is a war they are unlikely to win without soaking Reveille in blood.

To Chevalier, then. To the hope of mended rifts and new alliances. Each unmarried noble enters the monastery with their own agendas, some unwilling and some not. Not everyone in Reveille wishes for the Betrothal Covenant to succeed. Who is loyal and who is a traitor? Who can be trusted, and how can anyone choose whom to marry in less than a month’s time?

Signed, King Morgan of House Allard

Re: Lords & Ladies

I'm not hopeful. All of candentia's games were deleted...

Just when it really got started, too. Oh well.
