PROLOGUE
The village of Wrasseldown- your home town - is comprised mainly (85%) of gnomes. In this game, you will probably play a gnome but you can instead play a human, halfling, dwarf, elf, or (new race) Brownie. A human can be a fighter, cleric, thief, or magic-user. Gnomes can be a fighter, thief, thief-acrobat, chocolatier, wizard, cleric, or jester.
Wrasseldown survives mainly by making chocolates which it exports to the town nearby. In this town live humans. The village also creates honey (thanks to its race of Brownies), as well as cakes, cream and other small treats like gingerbread. There is also a region near the village where village gnomes mine for wonderful gems.
Adventures at the low levels can consist of hunting for new chocolate recipes, finding rare non-magical and exceptionally rare magical components. The more original the ingredient, the more exotic the cakes and chocolates that the village can make. This helps the village to prosper economically and bring food and riches to the village. Kobolds, goblins, orcs, and big ugly ogres like to spoil and steal recipes and candy. Therefore, you may come into conflict with such monsters. What is more, finding and keeping treasure can be difficult due to encroachment of chaotic monsters who benefit from such treasures. Monsters have been known to kidnap stray Brownies in the hills and forests, as well as humans and other friendly races, holding them for ransom. You may thus be called upon to rescue these folk.
Lately, the crazy antics of goblinoids and similar monstrous races - who seem to have multiplied in number - are causing havoc to Wrasseldown! The Clan Leader Robin Goodfellow, asks that you peruse the list of adventures on the notice board in the Adventurers' Guildhall and undertake one of them solo or in a group. You will be paid bonuses for completing the goal of the quest. If you succeed, you will gain experience (one character level per adventure). These quests are fast and action-oriented. If your character dies while on a quest, your next character (his or her sibling) can easily take their place!
HISTORY
The rolling hills and quaint meadows around Wrasseldown were home to many gnomes. -- and halflings. Nestled between the ominous Atlas Mountains and Canolbarth Forest, the area was attractive as a settling point for humans as well. Many centuries ago humans came to live here. The humans set up baronies into which gnome clans resisted subsumption. Goblinoid races and ogres have existed in the barony for as long as anyone can remember. The gnomes helped to bring relative peace to the human realm by driving off many of these bands of monsters and by this means the gnomes had a good rapport with the humans; in fact, the gnomes today have their own principality separate from all human and other races.
Many locations of peril exist -- from old abandoned castles, deep dark dungeons, haunted forests, meadows that hide value and riches, as well as ancient mines and windswept mountains. Hitherto, chocolate has featured in this vast landscape. There are rock pools and waterfalls of sugary syrup, rainbows of glittery candy, soft and mushy mushrooms that satisfy anyone's desire; sometimes it even rains sweet chocolate, and winter snow has brought noontide gifts. It is folly to ask the gods why they did this, for this assumes a god, and gnomes are more interested in gems than gods. That day in time when humans settled in the present area and gnomes emerged from their burrows, became the day when gnomes enjoyed the paradisiacal fruits of heaven: exploring wilderness, setting up `camp' in Wrasseldown and gradually -- over time -- letting the natural yet magical nature of the land overcome them, to the point where today they have overcome nature itself, mastering their realm and their environment and thus developing unique skills. One could be forgiven for thinking that this noble clan of Gnomes has learnt how to live in perfect harmony through history and with their environment.
It is in this place that your character was born, but we do not want to write the script of your future for your future is in your hands...
Note: The possibility of PC death is real at all times.
