Would it be possible to suggest a more open Map function, where we can give each map it's group designation, and we could have more then one dedicated to each group?

Really? Does no one else think it would be nice to multiple maps for group one? It seems Ridiculous to add every person to five groups, solely for the purpose of having five maps they can see.

Okay.. you are confusing me a bit. By group do you mean view by; Thread Groups, or double up the use of language/private message groups, or create a seperate set of Map viewing Groups?

Currently each map is specific to one Thread group. Each group can have one and only one map, or none at all.
I would like players in group one (for example) to have access to multiple maps thru the map function, where it belongs, rather than as a picture in a thread.

So if I have this right beyond the single Main map everyone see's, and the single group map only seen by the characters assigned to that group.
You would like a Secondary set of Main maps seen by no one unless they are tagged with a particular, player or group.

I don't know how you organize your 30 thread groups, but but as an expedient you could "burn" any extra groups you don't use by puting a picture then giving the player that needs that map that thread group map with out putting any actual threads in the group the map is assigned to.

Or just make a thread with a bunch of maps. You can either make the thread belong to the group or if several maps are seen by multiple groups, make a group for maps that everyone has access to and secret line the maps to whoever is allowed (though I haven't actually tried this, I expect it to work.). This also makes it easy to adjust who can see what and allows more detailed map legends and added intel associated with each map.

I typically make a thread for player aids that usually had any pictures, extra maps, or other such needed extras.

Sometimes it is evident that no one uses it, however it has come in handy more than a few times.

I have also thought about puting a map in MSG#1 of each thread then creating in game links to each area accessable to this area.  I need to double check but I think you can move the thread in and out of the players sight by changing the threads group without fritzing the link.

I would hate to burn any groups. To be fair, I doubt I've ever used more than a dozen, but it still seems a waste.

I've generally found storing the images somewhere like photobucket more effective.  Knowing that RPOL isn't interested in serving up lots of large images, it makes sense to me to just publish the different rounds maps on such a service and link/tag them into the posts.  I like that images can be associated with images, so you can have a location or group image tied to it.  I'm not a great big fan of changing the image constantly as you lose your history when you recycle images quickly.

Well then, perhaps the way to go is to simply lose that functionality all together?

Is there anyone to argue for the value of the map feature? If they have, I want to use it, but if it were to vanish, as LoreGuard seemed to suggest, there are other ways to do things.

I use the maps occasionally, when needed, so would not like to see the feature removed.

I don't think Loreguard is suggesting the removal of the feature, just suggesting an alternate way of using maps in your game (one which might provide something more in line with the requested changes).

Also note that the map space has been expanded from what it was originally (used to be one tiny map per game).  Further expansion is one of the things being considered as a subscription benefit.

Not actually looking for expansion, as much as the option to put however many maps I can have in a more convenient location.

Remember that you can create "in game" hyper links, you might be able to help control who see's what, by what thread group a map is placed in and creating the links to that maps thread and msg# position, in "secret to" or secret to group" private messages.

This may seem odd since you will likely simply be taking them to an Image Tag hyper link, to a photo bucket account.  But what it does is create authorization to see a map, then direct attention to that map by those you want to see it.
