A convenience: thread sorting in a game.

It would be nice if we could sort threads by some option other then most recent post.

Partial option, simply allow a sort option, such as by group, or even better, by name (then I could use naming conventions to set up a custom order), and preferably remember my preference for the sort

Full option, allow me to move the threads into whatever desired order and to remember that order.

Honestly, the partial option would be more then enough for me.

The reason behind this is the desire to run larger games with a homebrew system, so I want to organize the threads by those about the homebrew game system, those with setting information, each party of players (which might split up and have multiple threads), then have the welcome, rtj, gm notes, timeline, and ooc threads. Organizing all these even if only through using naming conventions would be a huge help and still allow me an overview rather than piecemeal searches.

Yes I know about filter, but filter hides everything not selected so I can only look at certain things, then need to load two screens every time I want to change the filter. An overview allows me to see everything in an organized fashion, much faster and allows me to prioritize what I look at closer.

Re: A convenience: thread sorting in a game.

You can already filter the threads by group.  :)

But I like the idea you have to sort by name.

Re: A convenience: thread sorting in a game.

I keep a list of links to different threads in an announcement/navigation thread.

So it looks like

Notice: Navigation
Introduction, RTJs and Rules
Setting Info
System Notes
Combat Cheatsheet
edited by GM at [date]
Game History
Day One
Professor Plum in the Library
Miss Scarlet in the Billiards Room
Colonel Mustard in the Study

Day Two
Colonel Mustard in the Library
Miss Scarlet and Rev. Green in the Conservatory
Professor Plum in the Kitchen
edited by GM at [date]

But it would be useful if the search function available in the RPOL forums like Community Chat and P:W could be implemented inside games. Then DarkLightHitomi and those of us running long or large games could put flags in our thread titles like "IC:Day1:" or "System:" or whatever and stick that in the search box.

Of course we could use groups to make use of the filters, but this gets confusing if also you're using them to hide IC threads from sets of players.

Re: A convenience: thread sorting in a game.

I've asked for the search feature before, thinking that since it was already available as part of the site it wouldn't be too difficult to activate it for the games, as well.  It wasn't shot down, and I think Jase said it's on the to-do list for a future update, but I could be mistaken.

I figure sorting by name would be the most likely as it should be the easiest to implement, interestingly, it is also the most useful in general.

Re: A convenience: thread sorting in a game.

When ever someone makes a game it seems there are always three threads made, RTJ, Character Creation, OOC. It would be nice if we had those three as part of the option when making a new game simply as a time saving measure. Plus having them automatically pinned to the top would also be nice.

Re: A convenience: thread sorting in a game.

Not everybody calls those threads by the same names (or even uses those three threads) and making them Notices pins them to the top anyway.  So any time saving would be minimal, especially when compared to the time actually taken to make an initial post in a thread (especially the RtJ and Character Creation threads).

Re: A convenience: thread sorting in a game.

Instead of "filtering" perhaps just a way of "sorting" might be just as effective and maybe what you're really asking for?  I would like that myself, so that I could have a prefix at the beginning of a thread Subject line (like ##'s) and then when the list was sorted by name, they would fall into place nicely. Something like the following:

Notice: Absences/AFK
Notice: Game Rules & Materials
Notice: Important Links & References

0.1 RTJ
0.2 Character Creation
0.3 General OOC

1.0 Chapter 1 - Prologue
1.1 Chapter 1 - Col. Mustard's Party
1.2 Chapter 1 - The Stroke of Midnight

2.0 Chapter 2 - Flashback - Ms. Scarlet
2.1 Chapter 2 - The Billiard Room
2.2 Chapter 2 - The Lead Pipe

If there was a checkbox or something for "Sort Threads Alphabetically" or "Sort Threads By Date" or ... then that would solve some of these organization issues, especially in a large game.
