"Save  and continue editing" button for editing post

I have lost count of the amount of times I have mistakenly closed an edited post without clicking update.

It would be nice to have another button next to the Update button called "Update but continue editing" (obviously jase will pick something more elegant) that saves your edits so far without taking you away from the edit screen.

Edited: to be more exact, I mean the screen you get when you click the Preview/Delay post button.

More useful for an automatic temporary save that occurs every so often and a dialog box (similar to when writing a new post and leaving without posting.).

Re: "Save  and continue editing" button for editing post

A lot of folk work around this by keeping a local file in a text editor and working on their post there until they're happy, then copy-pasting it.

Me, I keep a file on the desktop called scratch.txt, and just work from it most of the time.   Not ideal, I suppose, because it involves alt-tabbing between the EditPad and the browser, but RPoL's not the only place I use it (and getting every site to include extra space on their server for my drafts is not really practical).

Also, you should be getting a warning if you try to navigate away from or close the post window:

"This page is asking you to confirm that you want to leave - data you have entered may not be saved."

I'm in FF32.0.3 and I'm getting that message whether I try to back the page, close the tab, or close FF.

Re: "Save  and continue editing" button for editing post

I have recently been using Firefox & the 'Lazarus' add-on.  It will save your posts for you and allow you to recover several versions of it.

It comes in handy -- but doesn't help if you don't use FireFox, as Chrome doesn't have it and I don't think IE does either.

Lazarus is available for chrome.  I haven't used it, but a quick look shows it is there.  Apparently available for Safari as well.  IE is out of luck.

A strong argument for implementing this feature, then :)

Sadly, there is a bug with posting RPOL messages from IE into notepad, the line breaks disappear, and as this a work laptop I don't have the option for another browser and text editor :(

Re: "Save  and continue editing" button for editing post

A silly question maybe, but have you tried hitting return twice between lines?

I have the same issue with pasting text from MS Office on my phone.  But a pair of line spaces seems to leave the formatting intact where as just one makes them disappear.

Additionally you could try a cloud based editor such as Google docs, or even just typing it up in a blank email.

In reply to Vinny (msg # 7):

To me, it seems like adding more complexity to RPoL (and thus more maintenance time and more chances for things to break) for no reason.

With the already-existing scratchpad you have in each game, or notepad on your computer, or existing cloud-based services such as google docs or yahoo notepad, &c., it seems unnecessary to ask jase to add it to the site*.  Even with a limited, work-provided laptop, there are very good alternatives.

(I just tested, btw, I cannot reproduce the problem you mention with Notepad and IE.  IE receives just as many linebreaks as I enter in Notepad.  What versions of each are you using?  Do you use one "enter", or two, after each paragraph?)

(* note: this is the magic phrase from me; he's probably adding it right now.)

Re: "Save  and continue editing" button for editing post

Can you describe to me specifically what's happening with that table that you think should not?

It's hard to test unless I know what I'm looking for -- and tables treat newlines in special ways for whether to display them, too, depending on where that newline is.

Directly copy/pasting from the source of your post:

01020304050607080910111213141516171819202122232425
C        X   X * * * X   X               X   X     C
DX X = X X   X * * X X   X X X X = = X X X   X     D
EB           * *                             X     E
FX                                           =     F
GX         *                                 X     G
HX                               * *         X     H
IX                               * *         X     I

Copying into Notepad, closing the file, re-opening the file, then pasting back with IE:

01020304050607080910111213141516171819202122232425
C        X   X * * * X   X               X   X     C

FX                                           =     F
GX         *                                 X     G
HX                               * *         X     H

I know this is slightly off topic but just for kicks I thought I'd convert that table for OP :P Quote this post and see how I made this, it might be easier to manage and help alleviate some of the issues you're experiencing.

Re: "Save  and continue editing" button for editing post

Thanks anonymouse, will take a look!

cruinne, when you see the table in notepad, is it just one long line of text with no line breaks? It is for me.

Edit: anonmyouse, that is incredibly helpful, thanks a lot! Will be switching to that format from now on which should solve a lot of my problems!

Under the "Format" option, tick "Wordwrap" on. That should help some :-)

But even without wordwrap, I see it as several different lines.  I have Notepad version 6.1.
