Interesting idea

It would be neat if the GM could make secret parts of a post (similar to private lines) that could automatically roll for each player and display the secret portion only to players who rolled high enough. This would be awesome for perception checks or knowledge rolls.

The simple version just has the GM select the roll and DC, each player who views the post gets an automatic hidden roll to see the secret section, fail and they don't see anything at all, success and they see the secret text.

The best way though would be if each character could have a few preset stat boxes, (perhaps six such boxes with generic or GM set names), each box would have a dice roll with modifiers. Then a GM could post the secret post, set a DC, set roll above or below(by game probably), and which box to use. Then each player would view the thread, and each would get an automatic roll to see the secret text. This method is easy for the GM and players as each players dice roll boxes would set up when they do their character sheet, and the GM could use it easily and quickly without needing to ask for rolls or make a bunch of manual rolls after looking up the character sheets for everyone.

I don't know how easily it could be implemented though, but it should be generic enough for most games to be able to use it.

Re: Interesting idea

How I would do it:

When I was writing the post, as GM, I would make the secret rolls then write the secret/private lines to those who passed their checks.

I'm not sure how this (far, far more complex) system is better than that, except that it saves the GM rolling the dice a few times and looking at sheets.  Except, that's pretty much what a GM does in a rule-based game by definition.  It's not something I think RPoL could reliably take off their hands without enormous complexity being introduced.

Maybe I'm missing some crucial part?

Re: Interesting idea

Personally, as a GM  I only check the sheets when they get started or lvl. No need for me to keep checking them all the time.

And yes, the idea is save time from needing to look at a bunch of sheets and secret rolls which ends up as loading two pages for each player plus loading the thread you are posting the results in.

I normally use a phone, so all that page loading takes lots of time.

But clearly you need to check them often enough that you think that this would save you a lot of time.  :)

How I do it - copy all of the vital information into a single GM only thread.  So for a D20 game, every character's saves, attack bonuses, damage and skills are all in that one thread for easy reference.  Roll the dice and just open the one page to check the results against all of the characters.  You can even put in links next to each item to automatically roll a check for that item.

That seems better than picking out, for example, six items from the sheet to go into a limited number of stat boxes, because I can guarantee that I'll eventually hit a point where that limited number of boxes isn't enough.

Re: Interesting idea

I'm with BBR on this, the feature might be nice, but it is much to much effort for something that has fairly simple workarounds.

Re: Interesting idea

As at least a help, could using the dice roller code alleviate some of the problem?

Example:  [dice=1d20+2,d20+3,d20+5,d20+12 memo="Perception, K, J, L and Ar" record=yes]

Not sure if there is a code snippet that would make the whole thing private though, so that part may need to be checked manually. And you'd have to manually change the modifiers at each PC's level up when you check their sheets. I'm not too familiar with the dice link code.
