Missing Game Genere?

Ok, a while back I suggested a number of genuinely new game genres: Which may have been what kicked off the re-org of the genre list to the new and much better system, but one that I thought was fairly important got left out: War.

Or did it? I have the sneaking suspicion that there is some combination of the existing genres that the community now thinks covers that one, but I cannot figure out what.

So I am asking, not telling, "Do we have a gap which we need 'War' to fill?"

Re: Missing Game Genere?

The reorganisation was something that had been in the works for years, but took a long time because nobody ever agreed on what was needed.

Depending on the type of war, and how it's handled, you can use Strategy, Action/Adventure, Apocalyptic, or Drama, and combine it with something else to indicate a time period.

Re: Missing Game Genere?

That sounds, maddeningly vague. Yes, I had been thinking that perhaps A/A, Strategy, and a time period might combine to fit, or A/A and Drama, but... Well I guess the question has been answered, we have combos which work, so 'War' is not needed.

Re: Missing Game Genere?

The idea was to keep the categories fairly vague, so that they can each include a number of variations on a theme.

Re: Missing Game Genere?

I think "D&D" should fit the bill.  Groups of armed people roaming the planet, breaking into kobold's and goblins homes and usually slaying everything in sight... ;)

Re: Missing Game Genere?

I think Mass Combat would certainly help by adding an extra classification on what might be a warlike scenario.

Re: Missing Game Genere?

Mass Combat sounds more like an arena type thing than a war to me

Re: Missing Game Genere?

I disagree. An arena sounds like PvP, mass combat sounds like combat between units rather than individuals.

Re: Missing Game Genere?

Hmm. Based on that I'd place Mass Combat above Arena but below War in terms of scale

Re: Missing Game Genere?

I think Mass Combat and War are pretty durian similar. Only difference really is that War implies, to me, more about the effects of war on the landscape; people as well as just the actual carrying out of the battles.

My thinking too. Actually that's part of why I consider it an extra classification on Strategic, or some other category.

In reply to Joebobcool456 (msg # 9):

Actually mass combat is war, just it is only the combat, where-as war may or may not include the effects of war on the population (similar to the anime Pumpkin Scissors) and thus go beyond simple combat and strategy. So not really a difference in scale but rather it is a difference in scope.

Re: Missing Game Genere?

Might just be personal connotations putting our views at odds, I feel like it sounds more like a very large riot than an actual fight with sides. Meh. Still the combo genres we've got cover pretty much everything, so I'm not going to keep pretending to be very particular about the details of this one.
