Quote to text system

This is not a favorable system for most people....

People use quotes for things other than quoting people, and if your putting a char sheet in a quote then that can be almost all the post.

I don't know if this is just in the main thread or not, but ether way I think it's unnecessary.

Re: Quote to text system

What is it that you don't like about quoting?  I can't make it out from what you're saying.  What isn't favorable about it?  You do know you can delete what's inside the quoted texts, right?

unnecessary.

Testing quotes to see its all about.

Edit, Wow, I can't even quote half the above, how can a quote be most of a page?

Or are you talking about spoilers? This site doesn't condense spoilers (a limitation of the coding used if I recall correctly), which is very unfortunate.

Re: Quote to text system

I've quoted very long posts before, usually when the post I'm responding to is pages back and I don't want the players to have to go back and find it to know what's being referenced, but you don't have to use quotes if you don't want to.  You can use the hr code for lines or a different color or style text to set the quote off from the response.

Personally, I think the quote code offers more benefit that it causes trouble, so I certainly wouldn't be supporting getting rid of it, if that's Azraile's purpose.

Re: Quote to text system

personally I like to use quote tags around stuff I want to call attention to, like a sidebar from a game book.

Not sure where or why you would be using the quote feature for the character sheet.

Re: Quote to text system

No I'm not suggesting getting rid of it, just removing the restriction of having to have a proportionate sized text outside the quite.

And I do wish spoilers were the kind that exspanded and closed back down at a click.

Re: Quote to text system

Oh!  That's just here in the forums.  In your games the rule doesn't apply.  They do that to keep people from quoting whole posts just to say "Cool!".  :p

Re: Quote to text system

In reply to Azraile (msg # 7):

The restriction on the amount of text you can quote without an appropriate amount of unquoted text was a deliberate decision, and there are no plans to change it.

Collapsible spoilers would require javascript, something jase tries to avoid wherever possible, since not everybody has it enabled.  The current system works for everybody, whether they have javascript enabled or not.

Re: Quote to text system

ah

well you could put the option of the spoil text and bbc code with the post composing screen be in java that way it works for everyone but peopel using java can activate that way if they want *shrugs*

That would sure make getting posts looking the way you want easier if you didn't have to hit preview to see them

Re: Quote to text system

No, it doesn't work for everyone.  Spoilers coded in javascript will not show correctly for people who do not have javascript installed (which would, for example, include a lot of people who access the site from work, and are restricted in exactly what they can install on the computer).

So allowing people to, optionally, use collapsible spoilers just screws them up for a lot of other users.

As I said, the current system works exactly as intended, for all site users, whether they have javascript installed or not.

Re: Quote to text system

As BBR said, quoting limitations are done on the forums because people we being fruiting annoying with them.  Double was my annoyance as I had to waste my time programming in ways to force them to stop rather than people.. you know.. doing the right thing.  That all said, the next version (by some coincidence) won't worry about the quoted to original content for short messages (under about 400 characters).  Which is about the length of my message until this sentence.

Spoiler text can actually be done a different way to support the expand/collapse plus degrade nicely for those without javascript.  It's more complicated, the current system works, and it's just one item in a long list of things to be done.  Unfortunately not a priority at this stage.
