Mutants and Masterminds anyone?  Or any superhero RPG?

Mutants and Masterminds anyone?  Or any superhero RPG?

I really enjoy playing superhero RPG's.  I actually am a GM for a Mutants and Masterminds game in "real life".  But as fun as being a GM is, I WOULD actually like to play from time to time, so I'm hoping to drum up some interest here.

My preference would be MnM, but really I'll try anything.  More concerned about the genre than anything else.  Also, if I could cherry pick my setting, I would probably chose some sort of home-grown setting, rather than placing it in Marvel or DC.  But again - I'd play whatever.  Thanks all!

I'd love that. Let me know if you find anyone as I'll likely want to play. Games explicitly about supers seem to be distressingly rare.

Yeah I do know what you mean - it's strange how hard it is to drum up a game

I'm ALMOST ready to start something myself, but every time I try to start a game, it always ends with it being too hard for me to sustain.

Maybe if I kept the number of players kind of small - like 3 or 4?

I know Mutants and Masterminds, but I freely admit that it's a pretty crunchy system.  Do we know a better system for PbP stuff?

Possibly Truimphant would be better for a PbP?  It's got a very simple character creation system that leads into a simple system for determining everything that may need be to determined.

Masks is a great RPG system for PbP. Minimal rolls and much more about the collaborative story telling aspect. It's also by design about the teenaged super hero and as much about growing up and finding yourself as it is about beating up bad guys, so someone just looking for beat-em-up super action would want to look elsewhere.

I tried to get a game going earlier in the year and I just don't have the headspace for it with everything else I've got going on.

MWP's Cortex-Plus-based Marvel Heroic Roleplaying is also pretty good for pbp, as there's less crunchy bits involved in character creation (though I was forced to create a system for quantifying "power levels" and a power creation budget); I'll also say that it gives the player quite a bit of freedom in creating their character's powers to have the effect they want. There's a bit of a learning curve on the game mechanic, though, so it's a tradeoff.

That said, if you're into teenaged angst in your rpgs, I'll second the recommendation for Masks. "Damage" is more akin to emotional baggage, but the progression system is good and the rules are geared toward simplicity. Only PCs make rolls; the GM does not.

If the new Marvel Multiverse game wasn't so...Marvelly, I'd say it'd be interesting to delve into, but they're also going with a WotC new-D&D business model, and forcing you to spend $50 for very restricted electronic copies, so I won't recommend that to anyone 'til that changes (even as I'm interested in seeing how the gameplay goes...it seems like a decent setup).

That said, the crunchy bits in M&M-3 are largely in character creation; I can't say the mechanic itself make pbp any more difficult than other 3.5-based OGL systems do, at least in my experience. It may still be the way to go, especially since it allows players a level of freedom during creation to model their superhero idea.

MM3 is my go-to system. It's not really that crunchy once it hits the table, it's all the stuff that comes before that takes some time and thought. I for one appreciate the effect-first approach.

MHRP is okay. It's actually much crunchier at the table than MM3 is; between dice pools, action points, and the sometimes-vague nature of reactions and the horrible layout of the rulebook, I have a hard time recommending it to people who aren't already familiar with Cortex.

Masks can rot in the deepest depths of fruiting hell. I will never understand what people see in that game. It is so vague and ill-defined that you might as well be playing Fate.

Fate isn't a brilliant game system, but it's easy and generic enough to be adopted to anything you could ever want to play. It's my go-to choice for when I want to tell a story that doesn't require much tactical complexity but I don't want to go all the way towards making it freeform. Fate even has a supers addon!

I don't know anything about Truimphant or Marvel Universe. To be honest, I am in the process of leaving a Marvel Heroic game over being too Marvel-y. I wish I had realized how much fun I wasn't having before the game hit ten thousand posts.

I can GM in P&P ultimate and I'm experienced enough to teach people with zero experience how to play. This is just an offer, if you're not interested in learning a new system, totally understandable

I am in the primary stages of making a TotallyNotSuicideSquad M&M 3e game, if that interests anyone:
