My recent experience on Rpol has mostly been from a GM point of view, and while I enjoy the games that I run, I’m also looking to play again both for fun and to allow me to further develop as a writer and a GM. With that in mind, I was hoping to find a GM who would be willing to run either a solo or two player/one GM game of some variety for me based on the specifications set out below:
- The main focus of the games would be on character development and building relationships, so in many respects I’m looking for a writing partner as much as a GM, with the action and plot acting as a framework for the character to develop around. Romance would be a plus, but I’m not going to insist on anything which doesn’t fit or which anyone’s uncomfortable with.
- For the most part, I prefer small scale games with low powered characters that really have to work to overcome the odds, rather than being overpowered and dispatching hordes of foes with ease.
- I generally prefer using freeform rather than game systems (given my library of systems is limited and outdated), and I’d prefer to have games which are ADULT rated, mainly because I don’t want to have to worry if the game gets particularly dark or explicit.
In terms of the games themselves, I have a couple of concepts in mind:
1. A very ‘human’ Star Trek game
My relationship with Trek has always been a bit strained, because while I like many of the issues it deals with, along with many aspects of the setting, I find that the utopian feeling of the future made some of the character interactions a bit unrealistic and idealised, and that the fact the series had to appeal to a wide audience meant that I often found it to be clinical and sanitised.
With that in mind, I’d like to play a game set in the Trek universe, but with a far less optimistic feel and much more of a grey morality, where characters run the full gamut of emotions and where doing what Starfleet order isn’t always the right thing. I have some ideas for potential settings, but I’d be happy with anything which really embraces the concept above in some way, shape or form.
2. X Men Universe Game
I’ve always liked the X-Men on the grounds that they weren’t traditional superheroes, in that their powers were often more of a hindrance than a help, and their adventures tended to be forced upon them as much as something they sought out. The dynamic of characters like Cyclops and Jean Grey, for whom their abilities were dangerous and potentially out of control, was always one I enjoyed.
With that in mind, I’d be interested in playing a game which focuses on the journey of a mutant with recently discovered powers who has to adapt both to their new abilities and the downsides these bring, but also the friendships and relationships around them which are affected by their powers. Again, I have some ideas about the setting, but it’s negotiable as long as the main focus is on how they deal with their abilities and the reactions of those around them.
3. Hunter/Supernatural/Buffy-esque
I’ve always been interested in this kind of human vs the darker things dynamic, especially when the humans are trying to balance their normal lives with their escapades against the darkness, and how they grow and change as they see more of what goes on in the shadows and have to fight to keep their humanity and morality intact.
In terms of the game, I’d like to focus on someone newly realising that there’s something out there, and go from there. I have the 1Ed rules for Hunter the Vigil, which could be an option, but I’m more than happy to keep it freeform if that’s easier. Aside from that, I’m pretty open to ideas, and if there’s a specific setting/time period/universe you have in mind, then I’m more than happy to consider it.
