D&D 5e Suitable for Newbie

Hi all,

Following my post in Beginners, I've just got the starter pack for 5e and looking for someone to help me understand the DnD world. I don't have the Players Handbook or anything other than the simplified rules provided in the box and the basic campaign (which I understand would be too long for RPOL).

I'd like to be able to start off at Level 1 and scale it up in order to get used to the system. I will be running a real life game alongside this so the two should complement each other. I'd be open to any campaign or encounters that the prospective GM was interested in.

Cheers,

Joff

Perhaps some background here to help us out.

Do you have any previous role playing experience ??  Have you watched people playing ??

Starter pack ??  Do you mean the boxed Starter Set (with Lost Mines of Phandelver) ??  Just clarifying this.  Or the on-line 5th edition starter rules (legally available and free) ??

My experience is with the Player's Handbook, but that can be complicated to work thru on-line, easier face-to-face.  I have the boxed Starter Set and can get the online freebie rules.

Morning (or relevant),

It’s the boxed LMoP set but I can also access the rules online if they are more suitable for online play.

I’ve got minimal experience from watching videos online (those saved from Twitch and on YouTube). I read a lot of fantasy and sci fi, so whilst I don’t have RPing experience I think that I understand some of the really basic characteristics of the characters, although the D&D lore would be new to me. I’ve started to understand some of the real basics from the ‘Introduction to D&D’ Youtube vids which deal with basic skill, perception and attack checks.

OK, I have the LMoP set.  I have been reading thru the adventure, but not so much the rules.

Let me ponder this, I can open a game, would 1-2 others be OK ??  I would have to advertise for other equally new players.  that can be a chaotic stage to work thru.

Are you familiar with the RPOL dice roller ??  I can walk you thru it if needed.  I am not a computer geek and have yet to watch some DM you tube sessions.  I could use some advanced ideas, but not needed for getting you started.

In reply to Aslanii76 (msg # 4):

I would be interested in this. I have played a one shot at level 6, hopefully will do another night soon. This was in the land of Chult. I have also GMed games of Dread and role played fiasco. Love role play and the world of DnD. I have read the players handbook for the most part and am an avid viewer of online RPG shows like critical role.

I am looking for a beginner experience as I have never done a play by post. Seems like an awesome way to play for a working father with no time to set aside for 8 hour gaming sessions lol.

I would be interested in playing a Tiefling sorcerer or bard, but really I would be down to try anything. My goal is to play every kind of character at some point to see what I like best. I know enough to get through a campaign and could help a bit with a complete newbie as I just went through the process of learning and character building for my first in person game a couple months ago.

OK Smokin, another lad for the fray.  Do you have the Starter Boxed set ??  Joff only has those rules, which would dumb it down for you.  The freely available online rules may cover the same material than the boxed set, not sure about it though.

At this moment in time, I would not ask players to buy the Players Handbook (PHB).  If you like the game, you will need it to play in any other games.  If you don't like it, then I saved you the $$.

I don't have time to do a start up game tonight.  Tomorrow I have my usual Wednesday D&D after work, so I may not be back in time then.  Thursday I should be able to get things rolling.

If this section falls off the GM wanted, you can search for it.  I would tentatively title mine as Lost Mines Phandelver, which you can search for Friday night.  I'm usually on about 7-9 pm EST.

Lets see if I can get the RPOL setting design done tonight.  I will advertise in the Player's Wanted section.

Is this still happening? Or did I miss my chance to join? I do have the phb too and am familiar with the rules but I don't have the starter set.

After a several year RPoL hiatus, I think running a newbie 5e game sounds fun.  Still interested?

If you need another player, I'm happy to join - I do have the PHB but none of the player option books so it'll be a nice, basic character I'd roll up.
