Teen Supers/Mutants

Looking for a game that revolves around the lives of super powered teens. Whether in the vein of the Gen-13 cartoon movie (kids in a "special" school that does something to bring about their abilities) or New Mutants/X-Men ("special" kids brought to a school or some place similar to learn to control their powers). Preferably system light or freeform with guidance if at all possible. I've been in several that all died out ages ago, and now that life has calmed down a bit I'm hoping to get back into some games again.

Also as a side note, I'm not up to date on my comics so things set in Marvel/DC that require a lot of newer comic knowledge will likely be beyond me these days.

In reply to Gilren (msg # 1):

I was actually getting ready to post a request for a Masks game, but I'll piggy back on yours since it's a game system  that deals with super teens/young adults, specifically. I think it might work well for what you are looking for.

But, yeah. I'm not up for running a game, myself. I've tried to GM and I'm not good at it. If someone else out there would like to run us, count me in as a second!

I love the concept but I don't know MASKS or anything
if someone runs it and is ok with new players I'll be an extra player but I obviously can't run a system I'm not familiar with

Would love to play a MASKS game. Don't really have the time to GM, though. :/

Does it have to be a superhero academy setup? Or can it just be teens coming of age?

Would you be willing to use the Pathways system for character creation? Not necessarily for the rules system but as a mechanism for developing character backgrounds and connections?

Open to an AW hack not Masks?

I'd like to stay in supers, but it doesn't have to be a formal academy.

I'm not familiar with Pathways, so it's hard to say. If it's somewhere I can get hold of it or see it I'd check it out.

Never did MASKS so again, can't really answer it. I'd need quite a bit of hand holding in a system I've not used or something altered, so if that's ok I'd give it a shot.

Can't answer for the other people who posted here though.

Masks appears to be a completely free, pretty rules-light system.

http://www.magpiegames.com/masks/

I haven't looked too hard at it yet, as I just discovered it while reading this thread, but it looks promising. I would be up for a game in this system if anyone was running it.

Another option would be the old Marvel Super Heroes RPG. Also available for free legal download. I don't have a link handy right now, though. It's a little less stratified than Masks appears to be, and a little more rules heavy, but it's a good system.

If any of you are interested, I'm the co-GM of a game that centers around supernaturally altered teenagers in a post-apocalyptic utopia. We haven't started yet, we are still waiting for more players. Also, we will be using The Window system, which is very rules-lite, so the game has more emphasis on roleplaying and collaborative storytelling.

Pathways is a Cortex system for he Smallville game. Masks is an Apocalypse World hack. Both are centered around the drama and connections and interactions between players, and generally teenage heroes.

Smallville is a bit abstract as a system and stats are not your standard strength, intelligence, dexterity, etc. The thing I love about it is the character creation system, which charts your life path step by step while building a network of connections between the main characters, places, and a suite of extras. It all becomes a very complex web. You can look up Pathways maps on google and can see what I'm talking about.

Masks is designed to systematize character interactions. Characters are all built with an interconnected histories developed through a series of questions.

Both systems do a great job of character creation but I'd say both are also lacking in the playable mechanics area.

My suggestion/preference would be to use the Pathways system to build characters, spiced up by perhaps some of the Masks questions. Then use some other system (I'm a big fan of classic marvel super heroes) for the actual game play.

I love the concept of coming of age teen heroes and could do this in a supers academy, but sort of prefer not a formal academy/school. I also prefer a non canon world as I think it makes the learning/coming of age more compelling.

Sounds like you'd need to own Pathways in order to do that.. If it's that complicated.

And while I have a couple of Cortex products, Pathways is not among them.

What it creates is complex, but the system to get there is elegantly simple. I could walk you through it if you don't have a copy of Smallville.

Re: Teen Supers/Mutants

Honestly, I'd be up for any system. I'd just ask for patience as I learn whatever system is chosen.

But, I would definitely prefer something that isn't set in a school/academy. I much prefer the idea of these heroes being in a less rigid, set environment. Maybe they have mentors to guide them, but not actual teachers and classes.

In reply to Arislyn (msg # 12):

I always liked the idea of them trying to hold down a job and go to a regular school much like Chris Powell from DarkHawk as opposed to the Xmen method
tho both are of interest

In reply to Gamer75 (msg # 13):

I agree! I want them to try and have a normal life alongside their hero life. So, regular school is fine. I just don't want the "School for the Gifted" scenario.

I don't have Smallville, but if you think you can walk people through it, it's worth a try. Sounds like something that one would need to be able to look at though.

Re: Teen Supers/Mutants

I can create a work around that doesn't require the Smallville book. Since that's not the rule system we'd be using for gameplay anyway, it makes sense to avoid it anyway.

I'm open to suggestions on the game system, but check out the game wiki for more info. We'll see what this generates.

Re: Teen Supers/Mutants

***BUMP***

Well, two games fell though so I'm back to looking again. Still looking for a game that goes with the lives of super powered teens/young characters.

School setting would be nice. Not really looking for X-Men though.

Something in the vein of:
Gen-13 - Students brought to a place under the cover of being a school where they end up experimented on and granted abilities
PS 238 - Students going to a normal school on the surface, but actually end up going to a school for meta-humans to learn about their abilities in secret. (Webcomic called "PS238")
Magellan - A school set up for those of meta-human powers to learn publicly.  (Webcomic called "magellan")

Or something similar.

Not very well schooled on any current comic universes in particular, so home made stuff is good. In established ones (Marvel, DC, etc) I'd be a bit slow on any established heroes or storylines.

Re: Teen Supers/Mutants

Been a long time, so figured I'd rebump again. Hit a stop in some of my other games, and have very little active these days. Will admit I'm not a 2-3+ day poster usually due to a variety of factors, not least of which is health.

But I'd really like to play in another teenish supers.

Not all the characters need to be in that age range either, but I'd like mine to be youngish (18+ is also fine).

Re: Teen Supers/Mutants

I’ve been checking out “The Pool” which is a free and incredibly simple system. I’m not sure if I’d have enough time though, but I’ve kind of been playing with the highschool idea myself. A high posting rate isn’t needed for me as I’m a slow poster as well. I usually require at least one post a week, but nothing more.
