Evil monster PC 3.5 or d20 Modern

Hoping to play one of the things that goes bump in the night in a roleplay-focused, urban-centric campaign. Solo or group is fine. Minimum starting level of 3, no higher than 7. Odds are good I'll want to play some kind of homebrew evil fey. VERY STRONG preference for d20 Modern but will accept 3.5. Questions welcome.

Would you be willing to play evil monsters in a pathfinder game?

Pathfinder and I do not see eye to eye. Everything has a bunch of ridiculous variable modifiers and the things that needed to be simplified were complicated and the things that could use more complexity have been simplified. I have no doubt that it is better balanced than 3.5, but a shark and a hippo on a seesaw are more balanced than 3.5.

That said I am not entirely against Pathfinder, but you will need to hold my hand. PF seems to handle race recreation with "race points" and then conveniently forgets to explain what a race point is or how they're calculated.

The race points stuff is to do with the Race Builder found in one of the splat books, its not part of the core rules.

That said, the Race Builder is fairly straightforward once you find all the bits.

The Race Builder is there, but be warned - it can get very wonky, balance wise. It unfairly penalises large characters and dragons, for example, while making it very easy to create super-wizard races.

Just building up one of my race's ability scores to the required level takes 70 race points. This before adding racial features like shadow blend and flight.

I do not believe Pathfinder and I can get along.

Then you're doing it wrong or you're trying to make a ridiculously overpowered race.

Show me your race builder breakdown?

This is the one I did for my Portune race;

Portune Racebuilder Breakdown (20 points)
+0 Standard
      +2 Dex, +2 Int, -2 Str
+4 Tiny
      +2 Dex, -2 Str
-1 Slow
2 Fey
4 Adv. Intelligence
      +2 Int
4 Adv. Charisma
      +2 Cha
-2 Sunlight Vulnerability
+1 Urbanite
0 Soft Voice
8 Fly

I started with the Pixie for a baseline. Pathfinder pixie has higher base stats than the 3.5 pixie. With size bumped up to medium I'm looking at +8 dex, +4 con, +6 int, +4 wis, +6 cha. 4+5+6+7+4+5+4+5+6+4+5+4+5+6 = 70.

Then again Pathfinder pixie has four racial hit dice, so to hell with that.

Yeah, I still have no idea how you're making those numbers, but trying to make something with racial stats that high is still a bit crazy.

If you have your heart set on that set of racial modifiers...

Flexible Attribute Modifiers (+2 Dex, +2 Int) 2 points
Advanced Dexterity thrice (+6 Dex) 12 points
Advanced Constitution twice (+4 Con) 8 points
Advanced Intelligence twice (+4 Int) 8 points
Advanced Wisdom twice (+4 Wis) 8 points
Advanced Charisma thrice (+6 Cha) 12 points

50 race points.

It would be a better idea to put together an idea of how you want your character to play, go through the race builder in order picking the traits you think look right for the character, then set yourself a race point limit (30 would be fine for a monstrous campaign, 20 is the upper limit of what I'd say is fair for a regular campaign), and then ruthlessly cut down your list of desired traits until you have the handful that really exemplify what you want to play.

Someone made a handy tool for creating races with the Builder, by the way;

I think this is ready for a bump.

Based on the above discussion I've concluded Pathfinder does not have adequate provisions for playing a truly monstrous race, but if you're willing to permit fifty or more race points we could possibly make something work.

Do you have any familiarity with the Cypher system?  That could likely accommodate the sort of character you want.

It's a somewhat looser, less crunchy system than D&D or 3.5, with a wide scope for setting and tone.  Played at a mid-level of power (about tier 3, out of of max of 6), I believe might work for letting you play a nightgaunt haunting the streets of Gotham City (or whatever the specifics you end up deciding).  It'd mean a bit more role-playing and less roll-playing.  Does that hold any interest for you?

What sort of goals did you have for your evil monster?  Just terrorizing the hapless mortals?  Terrorizing mortals and fighting for territory with other monsters?  Having to dodge, or slay, monster hunters?

I'll look into the system. I tend to be slow to warm up to new things but a quick learner.

All of the above! I imagine it'd start with dodging hunters and end with having her own personal monster mafia to team up with the hunters to confront some bigger, badder threat... eventually. Someday. Possibly. Let's be realistic: it's RPoL, it won't get that far. But we can hope.

I do like the potential direction for the plot!  :)

If you decide the Cypher System is something you'd like to give a whirl, I believe I can give you a good game.  Drop me an rMail if all seems well and we'll talk details!
