TV, movies, and video games have an obsession with crime, criminals, and the seedy side of life, and so do I. I've wanted to play in a crime game for some time now, but for one reason or another, it always fails to pan out.
I want to keep away from science fiction or fantasy, so thieves guilds or Hutts will do it for me this time. The three eras/themes I'm considering:
- Prohibition: Gangsters in one of the big cities in the United States during the golden age of organized crime.
- 70s-80s: The big boom in the drug trade during the 70s and 80s. The darkest hours for Harlem and Miami.
- Modern: The Internet age has changed everything, even in crime. The old ways don't work anymore, and new faces are clawing their way to the top.
My inspirations are mostly game-oriented, rather than movies or books, and include: Gangbusters, the Mafia video game series, Saint's Row, Omerta: City of Gangsters, Dog Town, and, of course, Grand Theft Auto.
EDIT: Due to a couple of offers for good looking games that aren't what I'm looking for, a bit of clarification:
I am looking for a game where I will be playing a street-level criminal trying to claw their way towards wealth and power. While I'm not asking for something entirely 100% realistic, I do want to have to consider things like police investigations, the possibility of being caught, and that being shot sucks.
I also want a relatively open sandbox environment, rather than a story surrounding one particular job or heist. I want to be able to take jobs as they come, or to set up my own rackets, all the while having to consider those in power on both sides of the law. At least, until I'm successful enough to have become one of those people.
