Seeking existing or new Twilight 2000 game or GM
That's the big question, isn't it?
Setting and plot or system and mechanics; what makes for a better experience? Unless your players are mature enough to handle combat and conflict without being over the top or falling into childish "I shot you!" "No you didn't!" antics, then system and mechanics is the way to go. That can become tedious in a large firefight and doesn't offer much chance at saving a character with some creative writing or GM fiat that lets them fail but not die. Setting and plot leads to a richer story in my experience and it's what I prefer. It's also been a number of years, okay twenty...ish, since I've GMed TW2K so my skills with the system are rusty.
What are your thoughts on that, or do you have any strong ones?
The next major question is one of era. Are we in the traditional 1st generation setting, the post-Soviet era return of former communist states to independent rule of the 2nd generation, or the Euro-Russia war and Great Muslim war of the 3rd? Or do we simply borrow the ideas and feel of the setting as a hinted at background for our characters to move in front of? The average soldier or citizen will be largely ignorant of any but the largest pieces of world events and instead intensely focused on what's happening to them, today, right now, right here. Also, technology has intensely developed since the 1st generation setting which would make a more modern era ripe with non-traditional TW2K plot elements. That's neither good nor bad, merely something to consider. I lean towards the traditional late 1980s, 1990s setting but that could be comfort of experience speaking and not necessarily mean it's the best setting.
