Ars Magica and other games

Recently my interest in Ars Magica was reignited. I used to be the primary Storyteller for a troupe that lasted a few years, but that was back in 2nd edition. I have a copy of 5th edition and would love a chance to play it. Unfortunately at this time, I don't have the energy or focus to act as Storyteller but given a chance to play for a while, that might change.

I have a number of ideas bouncing in my head for magi and companions. And creating grogs is always fun!

If you're thinking about starting up a game, or have room in one, please consider me.

Ars Magica

If weight of interest has any affect on these things, I'll add more of that.  Unfortunately, Ars Magica is one of those games that I just flat-out do not have a handle on enough to run it.

Ars Magica

I think I have a handle on the rules but less so the world and how the game actually plays out.

I could try running a game for people but it would help to have a reference for how ars magica goes in play.  That or very proactive players that understand the world better than I do

Ars Magica

If it helps any, I do know at least one other person who would join in on an Ars Magica campaign.

I'm very familiar with the older versions of Ars Magica as I ran/played in a Troupe for years using 1st edition and later 2nd. I dabbled a bit with 3rd and 4th, but was turned off by some of White Wolf's changes. I have the main book and some of the supplements for 5th edition and would love a chance to play it.

Winding Path, do you have any specific questions about the setting or system? It is very different from D&D with time spent studying being just as important for a mage as adventuring, if not more important.

Troupe style play is something that most of the groups I've gamed with just didn't get into. But for the groups that did, it was awesome. Breaking down the game year into the four seasons and having usually one or two 'adventures' per year. Building up the Covenant as well as their mage and companion is something the players should be interested in.

True Troupe style play gets more difficult with the RPoL system as sharing GM duties would require granting another player full access to the game. But usually only a few players want to take on Storytelling duties.

Other games

There are a few other games I would love a chance to play either again or for the first time. These are in no particular order.

Torg
7th Sea 2nd edition - thank you Kickstarter
Firefly (Cortex Plus rules)
Delta Green
Night's Black Agents (Gumshoe)
Trail of Cthulhu (also Gumshoe)
Masks (A superhero system based on Apocalypse World)
The Laundry
Skyrealms of Jorune (2nd edition revised preferred)
Morrow Project (love the setting, not so sure on the system)
Space 1889
Traveller (Mongoose 2nd edition preferred)
Powers and Perils
Runequest (I just picked up the 2nd edition again via kickstarter)
Instant Game (Wonderful for short one shot games)

I admit, I love experimenting with game systems. I love seeing how they work and were they break down. I love systems built for the setting but I find the various attempts at Generic systems fascinating.

Basically, I would like to play something other than one of the common games you see on RPoL. The above list is what immediately springs to mind.

Ars Magica

In reply to Shadowsmith (msg # 6):

I don't have any specific questions I just find it hard to picture how the game flows.  It just seems so different from something like D&D.  I think I may need to find a PbP game to read through just to have an example

Delta Green

Any specific parameters you're looking for in DG?  It's on my short list of things to run (shoulder-to-shoulder with an Eclipse Phase idea I'm still forming).  DG is, strictly speaking, easier to do.

Really I like the idea of a spy/military organization that is dedicated to the (ultimately futile) fight against the Mythos. This is the reason I like Night's Black Agents and the Laundry as well.

Yeah, it is different from D&D. For one, the PCs aren't murder hobos (Note: I like and play D&D but I love that description). They have a home that is the center of the campaign. Long term Ars Magica games can see generations of PCs tied to the Covenant and watch as their home grows and changes.

An Ars Magica campaign can focus on politics (internal to the Order or external), trade, exploration, research, discovery, and adventure. It is possible to have a story that unfolds over years or decades in the campaign world. You can bring in historic events to the campaign. Do the companions or magi get involved in a Crusade? Do they get involved in mortal wars locally?

From my experience long ago, we had generally one adventure per year. Then we spent one season dealing with relations with nearby mortals - nobles, the church, or the like. And each magi would spend at least one season either researching via the library or working in their lab.

If I can locate an example of a campaign that you can read on-line, I will let you know.

Re: Ars Magica

Currently I'm no longer looking for new games. The one exception is if an Ars Magica game opens.
