Al-Qadim (D&D Arabian Adventures)?

I run and play second ed still.  I am pretty sure I HAVE the al Quaim setting info.  And as to the oriental, I think I have the Kara-Tur setting info too.

I have never actually played or run specifically in those settings, but would be willing to give it a burl if folks are interested.

Interested! :)

The Al-Qadim setting is in the Land of Fate boxed set and the rules are in Arabian Adventures, both of which you can find on DriveThruRPG. :)

Actually IIRC Arabian Adventures has kits for 'foreigners' so Kara-Tur characters could fit in in Zakhara (and vice versa.)

From the reviews I've read, the official books aren't really that great, so I probably won't buy them. There are lots of online resources though. And I bet that the players could come up with most of what the setting calls for by themselves.

Which suggestion interested you?

Most of the reviews I've read seem to like the books; it's been a while since I've read them but I remember liking them too.

Thank you for kind offer but I'm not a fan of 4th Edition (I much prefer 5th edition of the later editions.)

Let me know if you get the chance to get this going.  I have all my books still from both Al-Qadim and Oriental Adventures and would love to give it a run.

Al-Qadim (D&D Arabian Adventures)?

I love Al-Qadim! It was the only D&D I ran for years. Unfortunately there isn't a good version of it in the current D&D rules (3rd edition through 5th). While I am working on a 5e hack, it's a long way from playable.

Of all the recent editions, 5e is the best fit for Al-Qadim. The Rogue and Warrior kits are mostly simple Backgrounds. Some bring slightly modified Martial or Rogue archetypes or Bard Colleges. The big problems are Wizards and Sha'ir. As for priests, the hakima and kahin also need some work while the Pragmatists, Ethoists, Moralists, and Mystics are simple backgrounds.

Now, if someone is willing to run Al-Qadim, I would love to play. And once I'm ready to start play testing my 5e hack, I will be putting up an interest thread.

I'd love to see that hack when you have it ready - I'm a fan of 5e. :)

With the Sha'ir I guess it depends on whether you are going for just the general flavour of the kit or want something like the mechanics. If it is just the flavour ('genie powered spellcaster'), maybe go the Warlock route with a 'Genie Pact' and gen familiar?

I can see why trying to work with the 2e mechanics might be harder, but potentially more rewarding!

I'm using the warlock as a template for the Sha'ir but I'm creating a new class. Some of the warlock's mechanics just don't work for the Sha'ir (invocations I'm looking at you).

I'm giving Sha'ir cantrips they can cast without their gen, but all other spellcasting requires their gen.

But as I said, if anyone wants to run Al-Qadim, I would love to play.

Re: Al-Qadim (D&D Arabian Adventures)?

I love...the IDEA...of Al-Qadim. I love the richness of the setting and reading the books and flavor. But actually running or playing a game of it always seemed a bit daunting. I mean, there is a LOT of cultural stuff in there with as many personalities as tend to be in an online game that seems like it would make a game difficult (castes, honor, etc).

I'd love to play this as well.

You could do the Sha'ir as a warlock or a sorcerer with a familiar.

If 2nd or 5th aren't an option, something like Fate would work wonders without much need of hacking.

ETA: Or even Dungeon World with a little work. Hmm...

Ooh! This seems interesting. Even if I'm inexperienced when it comes to numbers and mechanics of D&D, can I tag along? If we ever get a game going? I looked up Al-Qadim and I'm currently getting a grasp of it. It appears my favorite race is viable to play, as an added bonus to that.

Kobolds.

*EDIT*
Also, if people need help with stuff RP-wise, I can definitely help. I've done roleplay for over five years and even designed an entire sci fi universe that I'm currently trying to use in order to set up something free-form or homebrew or whatever (this isn't relevant, nor am I trying to advertise it. Just mentioning something I'm working on.) I'd love to contribute to ideas for characters, plots, story archs, etc

Still interested in playing.

I spotted some stuff up on the DM's Guild site. Looks like there's a bit of love for Al-Qadim still. Looking through the most popular 2-3 books now.

Agree with mesneaky - actually pulling it off well seems daunting.

I'd be interested in a less crunchy system. FATE or Dungeon World (DW) would be my top preferences. 2E would probably be ok just because it wouldn't require conversion (but kind of dated system) and maybe 5E (I've seen enough of 5E to see they've tried to simplify everything).

I'm going to pull up Class Warfare (CW) and some free Al Qadim references to refresh myself on the abstracts of the various unique classes and see if DW is a light lift to convert. I'm hoping there's enough in CW to get close enough to the basic jist of the unique classes without major tinkering.

There's also a lengthy AQ conversion thread over on ENW. Lots of good stuff.

I was reading up on the historical Sha'ir... turns out they're bards. I guess the 2E folks didn't want to do that so they took the name and made them genie-wizards instead. Knowing that makes it easier to convert, but the setting would lose something unique.

You mean this thread? http://www.enworld.org/forum/s...-Fate-(5e-conversion)

I've been looking through it and I definitely like what I see so far. The idea of handling the Fighters and Rogues by background is a good one.

I ran a game in this background using Runequest as a game engine. For some reason I could not get anyone interested in the game. Since it would be against the rules to advertise my old game ... all I can suggest is you send me a PM and if there was interest I might restart that game.

Okay. RedTeamPyro talked me into GM'ing this.

I am going to re-erect an old game. The Background is Al-Quadim, but the system is Runequest. Do not let that bother you, the game is STORY heavy and system light. I am a newb GM with the system and newb players are encouraged. We will take the first mission very slow as far as the crunchy bit go.

Post if you are interested and I will send you an invite. The game is "Hired Help"

Re: Al-Qadim (D&D Arabian Adventures)?

I'm interested to run this setting. I recently checked for interest for a game inspired by Al-Qadim (among other similar things). The idea had been for a setting-similar, rules-simple homebrew. Though, if there's more call for the setting itself then run Al-Qadim I will. As for system...I'm partial to running it with 5ed D&D.

Re: Al-Qadim (D&D Arabian Adventures)?

I would love to see Al-Qadim run under 5e rules. Most of the non-magical kits are simply Backgrounds now as are the three main cleric kits. Wizard kits are the most problematic as Sorcerers, Elemental Wizards, and Sha'ir all changed how wizards work significantly.
