Legend of the Five Rings

Recently started running L5R for my better half (and my roommates) and I've developed a real desire to play the game. I'm a big fan of the setting (even if I'm not super familiar with it yet) and the culture. I'm not overally concerned about the edition but I am running 3rd edition currently. So let me lay out what I am looking for below.

What I want...

...to play a bushi. Clan isn't important but I don't want to be ronin (because I want to experience the Clan part of the culture) or Unicorn (because I hate horses).

...and that's about it really. I'm not super picky.

If you are interested in running send me a PM as I might not see any responses here.

While I am also up for L5R goodness (as a player), a small matter comes to mind that mind be important:

Private Messages are rMail (last I checked), so with you having rMail disabled... people can't send you private messages. Unless you're disabling it now, in which case you should be good.

I would also be very much interested. I played a one on one chat game for two sessions and loved it, and I'd like to explore the game and the world more.
Like the OP, I want to be part of a clan, though it doesn't matter much to me if I'm bushi, shugenja, or courtier.

I'm interested, but 3e ranks only slightly above 2e/d20 for me. If someone wants to GM 4e, or take a group back through the mists of time to 1e, I'd be very interested.

Low status & provincial start preferred. Helps samurai relax slightly, and not behave like slipping up means three cuts.

I prefer 4e's layout, duelling rules, and a number of other changed mechanics. I don't like 4e's weapons (it's as though they were forced to keep weapon stats after acknowledging they don't want weapon stats) or kata, but eh.
1e has the fact that they hadn't yet stripped away any of the original vision for rebalancing, correctness, or ease of use.
3e over-relies on free raises, and despite appreciating some of 3e's character options myself, I don't feel they're necessary to play those characters.

Fair enough. I'd still prefer 3e over 1e since I like the additional options but I'll play anything other than 2e.

Come on prospective GMs! We have a whole group just here. Put up a Game Proposal and I'm sure we'd see plenty more. Run it.

I know I posted wanting an l5r solo but would also be interested in this. Are we sure no one wants to run it? Where you guys thinking of a topaz championship as a starting place then moving forward? Also what clans/ char ideas do you guys like? Are we thinking magistrates or small pairs or solo in the same area or?

I like Crane and the Katita family. I know it might not be the best bushy school but I like it.

Well no one has offered to run it yet. And I honestly don't care about the set up is. I just want to play a bushi. As for Clans and families... I pretty much like all of them. I just don't want to play Unicorns because I hate horses. So very much.

My favorites would have to be the Crab, the Dragon, and the Scorpion though I am partial to the Badger and the Monkey Clans as well.

Legend of the Five Rings

I am toying with an idea for Legend of the Five Rings 4e.  The time period would be at the start of or just before the Great Famine.  My initial idea is that the Crab Clan has called early for a Twenty Winter Goblin and so their lands are now flooded with ronin who are wanting to participate.  At this time the Shadowlands are quite active which is why the announcement was made earlier than usual so that a large enough number could gather and swell the ranks.  The characters would be charged with duties on the wall and also on the country side assisting in keeping the ronin in line.

I hope to include a fair amount of action and adventure as the characters carry out war with the Shadowlands and with bandits along with political tension during the Winter months to advance their own personal agendas.  I love nothing more than to watch a player take their character forward through the social hierarchy of Rokugan and would personally love to have a game go long enough that heirs can be played.  Elements of investigation and horror may also appear.  Love stories can happen, but I am a believer in the tragic nature of Rokugan so be forewarned there.

Magic in my eyes is a mysterious and unknown thing.  I aim to keep things in that vein.  This does not mean shugenja are given penalties to their spellcasting, but I expect people to treat them as the mysterious priests they are and shugenja characters to act accordingly as well.

I make no promises this game will do anything more than die in the womb.  I have had many games do so and have also had many games die due to player attrition.  But I love this system and this idea is certainly churning.  My hope is that taking things slow so that I can develop out characters, NPCs, lands and plots will let things flourish.  I am moving in August so nothing will get started before then.  If people want to do this, I can open up a board and slowly populate things until then while players discuss their characters and what they'd like to see.  I certainly want player input to breathe life into the lands of the Crab Clan where we will be playing.

Any suggestions, questions or comments are welcome.

For that idea, I take it that mostly Bushi are needed, no Couriters as the focus will be on the wall and the Shadowlands fighting?

Where you thinking only Crab PCs or are the PCs Ronin?

I can easily see a collection of many PCs for the group being acceptable.  Many Clans send their warriors to the wall either to teach them humility, gain honor or simply have "done their service."  As for a courtier being there, I could see that happening so long as the character took at least some combat skills.  I would push for everyone to have their shining moment as a GM, as the first rule of the game is to have fun.

So do you see the players gaurding the wall or going into the Shadowland to kill goblins or are we watching the Ronin? Or will we be watching towns further into the Crab lands?

Mostly I would plan on the character patrolling the actual lands of the Crab.  I do intend for their to be some moments on the Wall and possibly an adventure into the Shadowlands, but that would be down the road.  At this point in my mindset much of the interaction with the Shadowlands will be in chasing down creatures that have made their way into the Crab lands.  There will also be much interaction with the ronin that have moved into the lands and are attempting to gain admission to the Clan.  The Great Famine will present a good opportunity for the Crab Clan to face off with their own peasants as well.

Sounds great to me as well. I can see perhaps the Emperor or Clan Champions sending individuals from several clans to help the Crab out, thus opening the game to non Crab individuals. Overall, very cool idea and fun.

Having looked over the little info I could find quickly off a Google search about that time frame it looks really cool. This is before the Unicorn and the Clans go to war for food and Crane and Lion fight and Crab and Crane fight (Crane got food....) so very interesting.

I am looking forward to making a Crab actually.
