Vietnam War rping game.

  Greetings,

Way back in the eighties, there was a rping game put out about rping in the Vietnam war. I always wanted to try my hand at this type of game and time period, I am seeking someone to GM a campaign, where the player or players would rp Special Forces or Black Ops type characters. Think of the main character in Apocalypse Now.

There was a war in the shadows, behind the conventional war, in South East Asia. Red China,Soviet Union, even factions within the U.S military. all had a hand, in  this shadow war. All these AND the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Communists, made the shadow war a multi faceted conflict.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Interesting. Free-form or using a system like twilight 2000?

Is this the kind of thing you had in mind:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recon_(role-playing_game)

I may be tempted to run this. Not necessarily using Recon, but other system, probably BRP. But it will not be a pulp game.

In reply to jmlima (msg # 4):

I am open to discuss any set of rules. I am more interested in the spirit of the game and time period then the rules.

Vietnam War rping game.

What would you guys want of this game? The way I see it , this can go several different ways:

- A combat, daily life focused game, 'a la' Platoon
- A game focused on a sort of psychotropic exploration of the war 'a la' apocalypse now
- A game focused on exploring the boundaries of the war, say a special ops team doing recon missions in Cambodja, Laos, the trail, etc.
- A game that introduces elements of the fantastic into a grim and very real setting, 'a la' x-files

I would say a mix of 1 and/or 3 (platoon and special ops).

How about a Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP), become Ranger companies later in the conflict.  Maybe start with RECONDO (reconnaissance commando) training.

I had a more Apocalypse now them in mind. I was thinking that instead of  the traditional  Special Ops (Seals, Special Forces.) these  folks report t the military chain of command. I was thinking more of the behind the scenes type of war in the shadows. The Vietnam war had many layers to it. The CIA, Corporations, The State department, factions from all three, etc. We would be like the main character in Apocalypse Now, we are one thing on the surface, but really black bag types. We don'y officially exist, what we do never happened, etc.
But if that is not everyone's cup of tea, I can go with more conventional Special Ops.

Fine with that, but are you both happy with that type of game? I will try to recruit more players, but having a solid core of two players is very good to ensure we always stay afloat.

Like I said, that is what I had in mind, but I am flexible. If folks want a more traditional Spec war type of game, I can roll with it.

Re:  Vietnam War rping game.

I'm good with both, can develop a character of interest in either case.

Right, it seems we have a plan. I will post on the interest check thread before going wild creating a game and then not finding enough players for it.

In reply to jmlima (msg # 15):

If we are ultra Black Ops, we might only be a two man team. Think again, of Apocalypse Now, He was but one man. What support they needed, they acquired long the way,the same way the main character did in Apoc Now. The support types have no need as to why are doing it,just follow orders.  Just my opinion.

Re:  Vietnam War rping game.

I tend to agree, this could be a lone player game, but this is rpol, I'm increasingly fidgety about starting games with few players since here, players and GMs tend to sometimes disappear pretty quickly...

Re:  Vietnam War rping game.

I would be interested if you guys do have room for another
however a two man team does make a lot of sense as well, sniper and spotter

it would not be impossible to make room for a third concept but I leave it up to you guys if you have room for me or not

full disclosure I'm not familiar with any of the systems mentioned
you guys have a right to know that

Re:  Vietnam War rping game.

Gents, anyone interested, I've started the game. At this point, please make a RTJ with a brief outline of your char concept, we will get the nitty gritty sorted out once general concepts are agreed. Game link:
