Old School Traveller

 Greetings,

I was introduced to the Sci Fi rpg Traveller, back in 1979. My best friend was the GM,and the two years it lasted, was one of the best rping experiences, of my decades at this hobby.
Sadly, my friend past away almost two years ago this month. That fact, plus finding my original books in the attic, has taken me down memory lane, and ignited my desire to rp in a classic Traveller game.
I am interested in either a solo or small group of players campaign, in the Spinward Marches of the Classic Treveller Imperium.

 Thank you.

also, sorry for the passing of your friend

Yes, classic traveller.  Not so sure I could GM it at this time - dealing with an ADD game right now.

Thank you for the responses. Perhaps someone, old guard, like myself, will remember Classic Traveller with the same fondness that we do, and feel the calling to be GM.. Here is to hope. :)

Old School Traveller

I'm old guard, I've been thinking of starting a Classic Traveller game for a while, but time is always a problem. Every time I think I may have a gaming window free, RL throws something else at me.

Another window is looming. If you want to take a chance, perhaps a 'short story' set task for a couple of months rather than an open ended sandbox - it would keep it tighter and wouldn't feel like too much of a heavy commitment for me.

I have a couple of caveats, though.

1. MTU predates the OTU (or predates its publication, anyway) so I run games in MTU not the OTU. If that's a deal-breaker, sorry, you'll have to keep looking for a GM. On a daily basis, you probably won't notice much difference.

2. Writing houserules for Traveller has been something of a solo game for me for 30 years. I have a lot of them. By now, I can't remember which of the rules I use are vanilla and which are mine. You'd have to accept the whole package. But again, back in the seventies we were actively encouraged to make our own stuff up.

Long story short, I'm offering Traveller straight from the original boxed set, with everything else homebrewed - It doesn't get much more 'old school' than that.

Interested?

What sort of story line / character interests you?

Let's rough out a few ideas for a plot and see if the others join in.

We can go Mercs, the oldie but still a goodie, Tramp Freighter crew? Suggestions folks.

Ok, looks like it's going to be a freighter game - probably a Free Trader with the usual crew.

Should we put an ad out for more crew, or do we prefer to make up numbers with NPCs if needed? If everyone is still in, I count four, but only two have contributed to planning so far.

Do you want a populated route or a semi-exploratory route?

Give me a preferred mix ratio of combat, mystery, interaction, etc.

I'm currently running 2 Traveller games, both Mongoose, but I started as a player in one, so it might be fun to play again.

I think a balance of 33/33/33 combat/mystery/interaction would work best.

I am still here, and damn interested. I would be using High Guard to create a former Naval character.

Ok, I'll run with a general mix. I'm happy with using any of the Classic LBBs except for the OTU setting material, of course.

I'll try to get something set up over the weekend.
Drop any requests or suggestions here, I'll keep checking back.

Do you prefer to do chargen by the book? Including/excluding 'death in chargen'? Or do you prefer a point-buy approach?

Note: site rules don't allow chargen here, but I think we can discuss some general outlines and limits for the chargen aspect of the game amongst other aspects while you're waiting for me to set up.

I have always gone with by the book character generation. While I don't do character death in the process, if the blow a reenlistment roll, they are out,and start at that age. Is that ok, soon to be GM?

And thank you for offering to run this. :)

Not sure what you mean by not allowing charagen here... you mean, in this thread?

The way I do it is once your game is set up, just create a private thread for each new person that RTJs: Chara Gen for Mikel Jaymes, and then deal with all there.

Ok, I rolled up twelve year veteran of the Imperial Navy. He failed his retention roll,so he mustered out. He was sent to OCS and served in the Line branch. His final rank was Lt.Commander. Not a bad character, all things considered.

Correct, the site rules don't allow chargen in this thread. Deciding whether we go by the book or engage in point-buy is probably as far as we should go. We'll do everything beyond that in the game. Bannacor was the OP and he wants to do it by the book, so that's fine by me.

However, I may vet/tweak characters once they're all done to ensure a good fit with each other and with my story.
