D&D 'Oriental Adventures'?

I've always been interested in the AD&D (and D&D) take on East Asian fantasy, and I have both the 1e and 3e Oriental Adventures, the Kara-Tur setting and the 2e Complete Ninja's Handbook, but I've never really got a chance to play such a game. Is any kindly GM type would be willing to run such a game?

Rule wise I'd be happy with any version of D&D except 4th edition which I never got into. A retroclone could also work.

As for setting, Kara-Tur always seemed fun and covered a lot but I'm not picky!

D&D 'Oriental Adventures'?

I have played in OE 3 a few times... I would not be opposed to playing in another.  Life is too hectic atm for me to run a game currently, however.

I also have the books and have been pondering such a setting.  I was thinking about the Chinese setting and working as trouble shooters for the provincial bureaus.  I tend not to use XP, you upgrade at some time during the campaign.  No evil characters though.  I have no online GM experience.

Wuxia could be fun, certainly. I've seen a few films and the mood looks interesting. Which edition were you leaning towards (Kara Tur has two 'China' settings)?

There is also a free d20 Wuxia game here: http://lordgwydion.blogspot.ie...g-swordsmen-rpg.html I played in a very brief game here on RPOL a couple of years ago that fizzled out unfortunately, but the game seemed pretty cool.

I will have to review Kara Tur for the China to use.  Yes, it has been ages since I last looked thru it.  I will look thru Flying Swordsmen too.  While China does seem to be a very staid, class driven setting, I would enjoy a flashy chambara style of play too.

For the moment, does everyone have Oriental Adventures ??

Re: D&D 'Oriental Adventures'?

Yep, both 1e and 3e (and a lot of 2e books with East Asian kits - The Complete Wizard's Handbook has the Wu Jen for instance.)

Re: D&D 'Oriental Adventures'?

The board disappeared ...  And not a computer geek by any means.  I'm working on a write up description tentatively titled Kara Tur.  I need to get my Vista machine up & running to find my OA & Kara Tur outlines.  ADD has an involved character gen sequence.

For the moment, you all worked on a just completed expedition as hirelings, thus qualifying for level 1 (maybe level 2 ??) with a couple extra proficiency slots for starting.  There would be a random honor bonus for completing the previous expedition - allowing a sort of brief background as to how you earned those honor points.  You are now finishing up recovering, dictating notes and more enjoyable past times.

I have ordered the D&D/3 OA book for reference purposes, but it could be another week or so before arriving.

Do I need to make this adult or will mature do ??

Because of real life, I only check RPOL evenings & weekends.  Thus it may move a bit slowly.  Is that OK ??  Work is intense & they will not let RPOL thru the filters.

Re: D&D 'Oriental Adventures'?

That sounds cool to me - I'm guessing you're thinking 1st edition then, right? :) Mature is fine.

It might be an idea to put up a thread in the Game Proposals forum to see if anyone else is interested before. Also Flying Swordsmen might be a good read even if you aren't using the rules, just for flavour (it is very Chinese focused while 'regular' OA has a strong Japanese angle.)

Re: D&D 'Oriental Adventures'?

I plan to do a game proposal, just that real life is difficult to dodge and several other gaming ideas/projects are being worked on.  ADD/1e is what I would be using, I have no D&D/3 books, but love their Forgotten Realms book, the one with the Celtic cover design.  Thus, my getting the OA too.
