Paleomythic, Stone and sorcery in the land of Ancient Mu.

Looking for someone to GM this game!

Imagine a world before recorded history, when tribes and kingdoms fought over primordial lands, when warriors struggled against savage and gigantic beasts, and when nefarious priests conceived their evil plans, whilst hidden away in their mysterious stone temples. This is a world where weapons are made of stone, wood and bone, and where armour is a thick hide or fur. It is a world where fabulous gems reward the bold, and where the curious can explore cave cities and discover strange new tribes.

What is Paleomythic?

Paleomythic is a Stone & Sorcery RPG, a phrase coined to describe a genre in which the adventure concepts of sword and sorcery are applied to a stone age setting. Armed with a bone sword, a flint spear or perhaps a skull topped cudgel, characters face ancient perils in a mythic land. To assist them in their adventures, characters can make use of their remarkable abilities. Perhaps they have the power of the cannibal, who is able to steal skills from the dead, or the abilities of the head shrinker, who can use macabre shrunken heads to defeat foes, or even the skills of a witchdoctor, who can call forth the dead.

This is the era before time, the time that never was, the Paleomythic.

That is an interesting concept, TheSnowpanther. I found it to be one of the most compelling game pitches that I have ever read on this site. I would be interested in reading that game if you ever get it off the ground.

What rule set -- if any -- would you want to use in such a game?

Dude, you come up with some great ideas... Why don't you ever run any of them? ;-)

I read through the preview of the rules. The description really seems to have a Tarzan of the Apes vibe to it -- which is a good thing. Let's see if anyone steps forward to run the game over the next couple of days while I browse the rules some more.

Yeah, got a little of that to!  I read all 24 of the Tarzan books and most of Edgar Rice Burrough's other series, save some later books of the Barsoom series.  From the age of 9-14.  Just when I was running out of things of his to read.  I discovered Conan the Barbarian and the other works of Robert E. Howard.  This game seems to be somewhat of a mash-up of some of the works of those two authors.  I read and collected the comics for the creations of both authors.  Through out the 70's.  Sold them all when I joined the Navy in 1980.  Sure wish I would of held on to them!

Panther, you are waaaaay more well read in this genre than me. Are you certain that you don't want to run the game?

In reply to chupabob (msg # 6):

I can't, right now I have something else in the pipeline that I'm working on to get ready to GM.  It's my take on the 'Points of Light/Nentir Vale' default setting from the D&D fourth edition.  Using a modified version of 'The Fantasy Trip' Rules.  That I'm ironing some of the wrinkles out of.  The Game Mechanic is roll 3d6 for a total at or below DX or IQ, to succeed.  Depending on what Skill/Spell one is using.  To get started quickly, I'm going to have Player choose from 6 Pre-generated PCs.  That grew up around one another, including 4 years of school, from age 9-12, in their hometown of Harken.

Re: Paleomythic, Stone and sorcery in the land of Ancient Mu.

I have read through most of the book now. Here is my take away.

I have never appreciated the counting successes mechanic for dice rolling. That annoys me slightly. Otherwise, the rules seem solid and straightforward. There is little here which could be considered innovative, but there is little call for it.

I could run this.

Hi,

I'm the author of this game; thanks for your interest (I thought I was the only one!).

I'd be very interested to see how this runs online, so your comments are appreciated.

Re: Paleomythic, Stone and sorcery in the land of Ancient Mu.

I recently came across Neozoic - haven't had the chance to read the comics yet, but it sounds like a very interesting setup. If you're not familiar, the basic premise is that the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs never hit, so dinos did not go extinct. It assumes that humans did evolve and have formed what looks like a standard fantasy society.

I think the idea of Paleomythic combined with the concept of dinos and humans living side by side could be a very interesting one. I'd be interested in trying that out as a player.

Re: Paleomythic, Stone and sorcery in the land of Ancient Mu.

I don't think humans would had evolved in the form we are now, if dinosaurs still roamed the earth during our development.  But as far as the Paleomythic setting goes.  The idea of there still being a few dinosaurs around in isolated valleys/canyons that were somehow blocked off by rock slides, via earthquakes countless generations before.  I think would be cool.  As a nice change of pace.  But not in the overall environment on a normal basis.

There's been some speculative science work done on what a dinosaur evolved to be humanoid would've been like...

Yes I agree that realistically this would not have happened. But this is a fantasy game. All sorts of explanations could create the situation. Or it could just be "that's the way it is". I think it would be interesting, and would fit with the general theme of Paleomythic, to set things in a place where dinosaurs are a major part of the environment.

But that's just me.

Re: Paleomythic, Stone and sorcery in the land of Ancient Mu.

I set up a space for this game. Snowpanther and I have been discussing the broad characteristics of the game, and I think we have something worked out that we all can enjoy. The game will start sometime early next week.
