Scoobypocalypse

Another crazy idea - something I've seen some fan art out there for. Scooby Doo apocalypse. I could see a zombie apocalypse or even a road warrior style setup. I'm thinking this would work with premade characters or perhaps allowing the players pick one of the characters from the show and build them. D20 modern seems like an easy way to go. Fred is a strong hero. Shaggy is fast. Velma is smart. Daphne could be dedicated or charismatic. Scooby could be tough or fast.

Anyone interested in taking a run at this?

Re: Scoobypocalypse

No one? Not even a single comment? You disappoint me RPOL.

I'm open to other suggestions around this theme. Other systems as well.

Re: Scoobypocalypse

Well, to be honest, d20 kind of turns me off, but I could see Fate Core or MotW. If you (or... say... the GM) pre-make the Monster of the Week characters it would not seemingly be too difficult to keep them in line with the intended tone of the game.

Of course if the intended tone is that when the Scooby-pocalypse happened it brought a more supernatural element to the investigations of Mystery Inc. then there you go.

Re: Scoobypocalypse

Interesting sounding ...  Perhaps GURPS ?? I can see this very quickly becoming a Looney Tunes adventure -- nothing wrong with that if everyone is rolling on the floor laughing and having a great time.

Re: Scoobypocalypse

I could see this being a serious game based on what the characters would be like in real life when faced with an apocalypse. I think I'd avoid mystery inc as a setup. Walking Dead (or the Road Warrior) just with Freddy, shaggy, Velma, daphne, and Scooby.

I could also see this as being a comical episodic thing set in an apocalypse. Strikes me as almost something like Gillian's island with zombies and the Scooby gang.

I'm particularly interested in the juxtaposition of comedy and horror/realism though.

Re: Scoobypocalypse

Now I could totally see Scooby as a werewolf based Monstrous, Shaggy the Flake, Velma the Expert, Fred as Chosen, and Daphne as the Mundane. In Monster of the Week anyway.

Re: Scoobypocalypse

Never played monster of the week but open to trying.

EDIT: at a glance, motw looks perfect!

Re: Scoobypocalypse

In looking through the Monster of the Week book, I like the way they are going as far as setup. In fact, the whole setup is perfectly attuned to the Scooby Gang (actually the nick name of Buffy's entourage and the inspiration for the game). I've never played anything with the Apocalypse World core, so this is interesting.

I do think using that game system perhaps changes the flavor of the game approach - instead of a zombie apocalypse, it seems to make more sense to set this up more like an episodic monster hunting game (hence "Monster of the Week"). This makes something more akin to another crazy Scooby-related idea: Scoobythulu (link to a message in this forum). This idea centers around the Mystery Inc. gang as a group of investigators who end up fighting real live monsters, cultists, and elder gods. As noted in that thread, there are direct links between Scooby Doo and Cthulu Mythos, and someone actually developed the gang as Cthulu characters (http://rpggeek.com/thread/575470/scooby-doo-cthulhu).

Some comments on systems: Cthulu is going to be much more serious, with sanity worked in there to see the downward slide of the gang. Could be interesting but will definitely go darker. Alternatively, we could drop sanity and just use the stats in a Basic Roleplaying environment. I think the only major difference here is sanity and it allows a more humorous edge to apply (although the challenge of mixing humor with horror is intriguing to me). On the flip side, MotW seems to be much more on the side of fun if not down right humor. Using Buffy as the measuring stick, it should be easy enough to mix seriousness with silliness by creating live action versions of the Scooby Gang. As Steelsmiter suggests, the archetypes fit pretty well. Where I'm not satisfied with MotW is that is seems almost too loose of a system. Results are custom per Move and I'm not totally clear how game play will actually work - this is possibly a great system for PBP, though, and I'm interested in trying it out. So much so that I am vaguely considering taking this on myself save for my dreadful track record with running games on this forum.

All of that said, I'll put it out there again if anyone is interested in taking this on. I'm open for MotW or for BRP/Cthulu or possibly other systems.

Takers?

Re: Scoobypocalypse

I always try to play a game at least once before I run it or I'd run MotW, but I'd play it if anyone else would run MotW.
