Discworld roleplay anyone?

Discworld has a lot of potential for rp but i've never even heard of anyone attempting a game.

Re: Discworld roleplay anyone?

I have seen a couple of threads about this before. Interest would seem strong, but then a debate on what system would be best happens, and no game is ever made.

Good luck.

Re: Discworld roleplay anyone?

GRUPS i'd be guessing. But it's a lot of work for GM i'd think. He'd have to come up with all the elements and know the books inside and out. I've never GM'd before but i'd imagine if there isn't a system and templates for it already, it would take a lot of effort to make it and it would still be flawed. But it's still something i'd really like to try out. I mean being a member of the thieves guild in ankh morpork or be a goblin discovering the world or something. It would be awesome.

Re: Discworld roleplay anyone?

Too bad it's not 4th edition. sjgames learned a lot from its VDS criticisms. I considered playing a sentient ferret once, but I couldn't get a game set between the Past of Night Watch and the start of Guards! Guards! but I wanted a FATE Core game for that, because the aspect would have been so easy to handle. Since my computer died, I don't have access to my GURPS 4th ed conversion or I'd run it myself in GURPS. But that would kind of detract from me being able to play.

Re: Discworld roleplay anyone?

GURPS Discworld and GURPS Discworld Also have plenty of ideas and useful material in 'em.  I'm pretty sure there's a GURPS Discworld for 4E that's coming out soon.  I've long wanted to run or play the adventure "A Little Job for the Patrcian."

Edit: Yep, it's nearly ready:  http://www.sjgames.com/ill/arc..._2015_Hold_For_GURPS

Re: Discworld roleplay anyone?

A big problem with Discworld games is that players expect them to be funny. Unfortunately most of us just don't have the writing talent to create a really funny narrative in a Pratchett-esque manner. So games tend to start with lots of enthusiasm then quickly fade.

But, if anyone does set one up and makes a success then I applaud them. :)

Re: Discworld roleplay anyone?

huh.. imagine that.. it exists.

It wouldn't be all up to the GM to make it funny. That's a very common mistake that the GMs should be doing all the legg work and PCs just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Re: Discworld roleplay anyone?

If anyone is interested in starting a Discworld game then I'd be interested in joining.  There was one a while ago (that I lurked) that was based the Watch and that always struck me as a good idea.

Any GMs out there that would fancy giving Discworld a go?

Re: Discworld roleplay anyone?

I really want to play this and have found a system released that is officially disk world. I will need to read through it before I can hope to run it.

Re: Discworld roleplay anyone?

Yeah, I have to agree with Jarodemo in that consistent comedy is hard like that.

That said I love the setting. If anything I'd advise a GM to go with a straight, serious plot (ie. a murder mystery, like in Feet of Clay) and tweak it a little to make it more Discworldy. Don't be afraid of adaptation either - there is a lot of Shakespeare in Wyrd Sisters for instance.

So would the people at sjgames. Actually the book is rife with suggestions like that. I feel confident in my Pratchettese to run it if I can ever either set up a Fate Core game or get my 4E GURPS conversion up/running/complete.

It would either be:
1) During Snapcase's reign as I described in my previous post.

2) Thee Othere Syde of thee Dysk (Inspired by The Last Hero) I thought: Why not just run a game on some of the communities on the edge of the world that have no exposure to the likes of Ridcully or Vimes, yet have similar equivalents, much like Fourecks does?

3) or a game where Dibbler decides he's too old to run it on his own and decides to enfranchise, (I'm sorry, but I HAVE to call that one A Fist Full of Dibblers) taking a cut for himself in exchange for the right to use the name Dibbler. I could definitely see that one going all Time Monk-ey and explaining where there were Dibhalas and Diblangs all over the place. And since we probably won't get any sort of official word on the subject it seems like an appropriate send-off (even if it is a little late coming).

Re: Discworld roleplay anyone?

Thee othere syde of thee dysk sounds like a brilliant idea for a plot... but how about quite litterally having it set on the other side, where a giant turtle fills the sky? Or perhaps, involving some great plot of leonard de quirm to tunnel through the disk for some obscure reason? Journey to the center of the earth, diskworld style.
