I dunno about all the other hard core gamers on here... but I personally would love to have a GM do a d20 game modern/Apocalypse with the premiss of XCOM as the story line

I was actually brainstorming something like this a while ago, tossing up between using D20 Modern, Pathfinder Modern, Spycraft 2.0 or FATEcore for it. I think one of the advantages of doing XCOM as a proper RPG is the opportunity to tackle the non-combat side - investigating UFO sightings, controlling information, research, propaganda and so forth.

If there's enough interest, I might give it a shot.

edit: To make sure the people who are interested are all on the same page, what sort of lethality level are people looking for? To capture the spirit of XCOM, it seems to me it might be good to have a potentially high PC death rate, with players then able to bring in replacement PCs for the next mission (perhaps they could play NPCs or aliens in the meantime). On the other hand, I can also understand the sentiment that players may want to keep their characters alive so as to develop story arcs and relationships over time. What do y'all think?

I have found d20 modern, as a system, to be just plain awful. I don't like it for any purpose I have tried.
If we were playing any other system, I would be all over this.

with a possibly high PC mortality rate, it would force PC's to definitely invest in some sort of health pack to keep team mates alive... perhaps consider a type of "bleedout" timer?

Bleedout as in a couple turns of serious wounds, and you die? Or something else?

I'm not talking about specific mechanics (most games have those already), I'm asking about the general philosophy and attitude towards PC mortality you'd like to see. Should it be like the computer game, where bad luck and bad planning can drop soldiers left and right on a mission, or more like most RPGs, where the PCs have some degree of 'protagonist shields'?

I've got no problem with a high mortality rate. I'd also be fine with it being low mortality. Having a constant fear of death, better emulates the games IMO.

Ohh I love xcom. I would like to play too.

I'm fine with rookie mistakes lead to death... that's half the fun of xcom, making sure you think before just going in blasting...

For those of you still interested, I might be willing to GM an xcom game. I have never played Xcom but id be willing to do extensive research into it. Another thing may interest you is I am attempting to start up an alien apocalypse Vietnam era game. Not quite the same thing but might be of interest.
