Wheel of Time

I've been binging the entire series leading up to my first read of the final book (presently close to finishing book 11). Somewhere along the way I got it in my head that I really REALLY want to play in a WoT game. Whether it be freeform, the published d20, or the homebrewed SAGA conversion I don't care (though I prefer freeform or SAGA conversion). So long as there are no spoilers for the final book I don't care all that much about the era either so long as the world is mostly recognizable.

Sadly, I lack the free time to organize a game myself. Not to mention not having a story in mind. I have character ideas I'd love to pursue but no major story arcs in mind. So, are there any fellow WoT fans out there who've been dying to run a game but haven't tried for lack of potential players? Here's hoping.... :)

Re: Wheel of Time

If someone were to GM this, I could go in for a Wheel of Time game, though I'd prefer freeform.

Re: Wheel of Time

I am around book 10 now having ready the first five books back a decade ago.  What a great set of work.  I am getting so much more out of the books this time around.

Re: Wheel of Time

Just got to book 12. It really is fun re-reading the series. It sheds a great deal of context onto everything that happens. Things that characters do early on become so much more clear when you learn things about them much later.

In any case, does this make one or two people besides me interested in joining a Wheel of Time game? Obviously Helvorn is a fellow fan but they didn't really express whether a WoT game would interest them.

Re: Wheel of Time

Probably my favorite series of book by an equally amazing author (and co-author). Read em all and tried doing something like this a year or two ago that fell apart quickly. Color me interested for something freeform. I wouldn't be entirely against d20 or SAGA but I don't have extensive experience with either. Mostly a pathfinder and D&D guy myself.

Re: Wheel of Time

no.  everyone dies.  I dont want to throw away spoilers, but certain folks do die.  others who maybe should, dont.  Its, an ending, but not the ending you expect.

Well I know Eqwene dies. I wouldn't be surprised if Rand did die. Not sure of anyone else. I guess I will read the books and find out.

Re: Wheel of Time

I have a few storylines in mind.

One set during the Trolloc Wars.
One set about 150 years after Tarmon Gaidon.
and one set in the year following the end of the Aiel War.

I'm comfortable (from least to most) with the following systems.

D20 WoT (official)
Freefrom
Moment of Truth
FATE (Core or Accelerated)

As a point of interest. There is an unofficial Pathfinder adaptation of the D20 WoT rulebook. I've downloaded it, but haven't read it all the way through yet.

Re: Wheel of Time

Though, considering how rpol games go, it would be smarter to focus on one scene at a time.

Re: Wheel of Time

I would be happy with any of those three settings. I am one and a half books away from being able to play in a game post-Tarmon Gai'don. I'll probably finish the last book in mid to late January, though. Not much of a delay.

As to system, I have zero familiarity with FATE or Moment of Truth and no desire to learn. Freeform is always fine by me. I am not partial to the official d20 rules for WoT but the Under the Dragon Banner update fixes most of the issues I have with it. I had a look at the Pathfinder conversion you mentioned. For the most part it is well done but I have a few serious gripes with how classes are handled. Instead of things like Blademaster, Warder, Aes Sedai, etc being prestige classes they are just archetypes. So, you can start play at first level as a blademaster or a warder. Plus, Algai'd'siswai still get the short stick. They are not given any way to keep pace damage-wise with an armsman simply because their weapon di is only a d6, whereas most armsmen will be using a d10 or 2d6. Personally, I still think the SAGA conversion for WoT did the rules best. Huge fan of how they handled Blademaster (with all the blade techniques being made into martial force power equivalents).

Re: Wheel of Time

Well, I suppose which system we use depends on which setting we choose. The Trolloc War would be fairly heavy on combat (which would benefit from a system). The one set just after the Aiel War would have a moderate amount of combat. And the post Tarmon Gai'don game would be mostly investigation.

Re: Wheel of Time

Post Aiel War would likely be easiest to do as there is more information to draw from. We know pretty extensively what the state of the world is like. Trolloc Wars is a more fun idea and there's still a decent bit to draw from. Post Tarmon Gai'don..... I'd want to know more about the premise before jumping into that. Investigative games can be a lot of fun but they can also get tedious if they're not done just right.

Re: Wheel of Time

With the Ogier finally withdrawn from the world and the Seanchan apparently focused elsewhere, an invitation is sent to all of the leaders on this side of the ocean to meet with the Empress "may she live forever". The Queen of Andor is assassinated prior to the meeting without an heir and you are called upon to investigate. Failure may drive the entire world into a war that will destroy everything built up over the past 150 years.

Re: Wheel of Time

Hmmmm....... I think I would prefer either the Trolloc Wars or post-Aiel War for the setting. If I were going to be in muliple WoT games I'd love to explore how the world changes after Tarmon Gai'don. If I'm only going to be in one I'd prefer a more familiar setting.
