Historical grand strategy statebuilding game

Hey folks!

I've just found this forum and it looks cool.
I've been desperately searching for play-by-forum or play-by-email games where each player takes on a country in medieval Europe. The game then rolls through time, monarchs die, new ones come, but the player remains in control of the country. Much like the Medieval: Total War or Europa Universalis series.

I had found one game, but it soon died. It was based on Statecraft (http://www.scribd.com/doc/9918...-RPG-PUBLICBETA-v1-0).

We could use this or any other system, the main thing is that it should be set in medieval Europe with actual countries, so no magic and other fantasy stuff.

Anyone interested?

Re: Historical statebuilding game

Could be tempted to play in this. Will be running a similar game sometime in 2015, but not with actual countries nor in medieval Europe

Re: Historical statebuilding game

Can you think of anyone else who would play it? Maybe if we get a handful of us together, it will be easier to find a GM.

I would definitely be interested in participating if a GM can be found.

Re: Historical statebuilding game

Would you only be interrested in statebuilding or would you want some quests thrown in for characters in your state?

What would you feel about being a group of colonists settling unknown lands?

Re: Historical statebuilding game

Hi Frili!
To my understanding, the game would be a so-called grand strategy game like the PC games mentioned in my original post (renamed thread accordingly). Therefore, there won't be many characters apart from some generals and maybe royal family.

So grand strategy statebuilding it is. But I would like to have RPG elements, but RPing the role of the monarch among the rulers of other states.

Re: Historical statebuilding game

I might try to hack Fate for this. But I cannot honestly promise daily posts, more like two-three posts a week. Would you want to do real countries or made up countries?

Re: Historical statebuilding game

I've been planning a game along these lines for a while - a year or two - but it's not ready yet. I'll be intending to bring role play and strategy together in an alternate history mediaeval Europe. You might play heads of state or you might more likely play barons working your way up.

I'm just mentioning this in case you're putting out feelers, but if you want to start tomorrow, my game won't be ready. Spring 2015 - maybe.

The thing is, heads of state rarely meet face to face, most negotiations are carried out via ambassadors, so it's difficult realistically to RP heads of state chatting to one another. Depends how realistic you want to be.

In reply to Frili (msg # 7):

Well, last time I played Statecraft by email, 1 week was 1 season or even half a year, so I guess that's fine. As I said in my original posts, I would very much prefer real countries.

In reply to icosahedron152 (msg # 8):

Sounds good, although I'd rather not wait that long. If there's free capacity, on the other hand, I would play it as well when the time comes.
I know, but they have been sending letters. That kind of correspondence can be roleplayed too.

Re: Historical statebuilding game

I'd love to play this in a Modern World setting.

Things like OPEC, UN, EU....

I'd play for sure. Things like War, and international issues as well as maybe the GM tossing in Random global events?

Olympics to boom economy?
Terrorist for internal unrest?
Maybe even like a earthquake?

All being GM decided.

Re: Historical statebuilding game

I think there are plenty of examples for modern games like this, but I've been struggling to find medieval ones. Therefore, I insist that we stay with the original idea.

Re: Historical statebuilding game

Right, I'm sorry Zeller, but I'll probably not be able to realistically do this at the moment. Studies, work and other games I'm running, combined with general housekeeping leave little place for this. I'll undoubtably still toy with the idea in my head though, so who knows, I might return to you.

Re: Historical statebuilding game

I would love to play this game honestly at what ever time period - I've read over it and seems like a lot of fun and easy to host here so if someone does decide to pick it up I'd like to play.

@Frili: too bad, but i totally understand the issue. Would you still be interested in playing though?
@RotnSoul: glad to hear that!

Re: Historical statebuilding game

I'm actually developing a game that could date your desire for this. Very simple system, though.  I generally try to make it more freeform though. When I get home I'll throw down a rough idea in the game and post a link for you to look at.

Re: Historical statebuilding game

Hey! So I'm running a game a lot like this, except it will advance through time as technology is researched. The players are all in control of one civilisation, and vote on budget decisions and how to react to other civilisations or events. We are still working things out as originally the game was gonna be what you wanted but I'm worried it will get boring fast.
