Simple rules; simple motivations

I'm looking for a nice simple game of something.  Nice easy 10 minute character creation; the sort where you pick a race and class, roll your stats, and calculate a few derived stats, then write up a quick paragraph for background.  Not one of those almost-but-not-quite-freeform deals, though.

Likewise, setting and characterisation should be just complex enough to be interesting, without being intricate and full of subtlety.

It needn't be fantasy; I love pretty much every genre out there, provided it's not inspired by/based on anime (Asian-inspired settings are fine though).

Re: Simple rules; simple motivations

When you say "ten minute character creation" does that assume you're already familiar with the system? Not sure why I asked since I don't know anything like that (BESM comes close, but VERY anime).

Re: Simple rules; simple motivations

It doesn't have to be literally 10 minutes or less, but yes, assuming the system is known. That said, I'm fine with learning a system as long as it has that simplicity I'm after.

Labyrinth Lord would be an example of the sort of game I mean; roll stats, pick class, roll gold and pick equipment, pick spells if appropriate, and you're done, more or less, apart from a few derived stats.

Re: Simple rules; simple motivations

I've had an idea on the back burner for a while; a BESM game set very late in the last years of the universe. All the stars have long since gone cold, planets are destroyed or strip mined. Pretty simple setting, equally simple motivations, not a lot of restrictions since we'd have pretty much everything the universe has ever produced to work with. Though it'd use a system designed for anime games, it's only as anime as anyone would make it. It's meant to be a lighthearted and, yes, simple game. The most complex thing would be figuring out a way for everyone to pitch in to create a ship. The premise may or may not have been inspired by FTL. =P

If you're not familiar with BESM, it's basically you get to pick and choose whatever attributes strike your fancy that you can afford with the points you start with. Anything more complex than that is you, not the game. Plus it's one of those games you can play entirely with just a pair of D6.

I can take it off the low burn and fast-track it onto RPoL if that sounds like a game you'd like.

Re: Simple rules; simple motivations

Cyberpunk 2020 would very much be like this. The characters, if using only the basic manual, can be created in about ten minutes, even less if you use the random tables for cyberware and so on. And in that, you can even have a skeleton for your background randomized.

Re: Simple rules; simple motivations

PhantomSkyfire's setting sounds good, and I'm familiar with FTL.  What edition of BESM should I be checking out?

mediiic, are you offering to run it?  I haven't played Cyberpunk 2020, but I like cyberpunk.

That'd be the third edition.

Re: Simple rules; simple motivations

Well, the rules seem reasonably straightforward.  It would depend basically on what sort of tone the game has set out from the beginning.  To be honest I wouldn't enjoy myself much if I made a fairly ordinary if highly trained human soldier or even an alien Psicorps operative, and ended up running around with a magical catgirl princess and a half-kappa swordsman.  It'd be better if I kept looking if I could expect that sort of thing.

Re: Simple rules; simple motivations

While I'd be trying very hard not to place any undue limitations on character concepts, I think such goofy ideas as those would be highly detrimental to the intended tone of the game. I'm a rather serious person for the most part and would expect the same from the players. You needn't worry.

I'm hurriedly workshopping a game together. You can find it here! THE GAME IS RATED MATURE: link to another game
