Mongoose traveller

Hello everyone.

Quick bio note; I've been a player/GM on RPOL for several years now. Currently playing in 5 games and running 1.

The games I play in are slow enough that I have time to join another. I post at least once a day (or more) unless hit with a RL bat.

I'm looking to find a "new" Mongoose traveller game to be run by an experienced/dedicated GM, that already isn't running 2-3 games...that's always the killer...GMs burn out.

It would need to be Mature, characters/equipment allowed from ALL of the books (well, maybe not that robotics stuff;-) ) and would need to be well paced, at least 5 posts a week (weekends are always slow).

The premise would be to return to the foundations of traveller. The nuts and bolts, nitty-gritty universe that I recall when I played classic traveller many years ago.

No amnesia, no--you're stuck in an alien ship/alternate universe/escape pod...

The standard, you all muster out/retire on planet <insert name> (within the Imperium), and begin your adventures...you hear of several patrons...you know, the standard.

One last thing, I'm looking for this to be a long-term game, not a flash in the pan...I've already had WAY too many of those...a game that should run into the far, far future.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Re: Mongoose traveller

I'd quite like to join a game like this too.

Alot of the time I get turned off a Trav game is when a GM wants the character background before being allowed into the game and random-rolling them up... As we all know the dice-gods are fickle and your ace pilot may end up being a crippled engineer...

That being said if this does happen I'm not adverse to a writing sample for a regular post of mine in an RTJ or fleshing out background once my character is generated!

Its been a while since I played Trav and I do miss it.

Re: Mongoose traveller

Chargen should be normal...it would be something like this...

Ok, I want to play a human male...starting as an agent...using either the Core rule book agent, or the agent source book...NOTE: No limit to terms...if you want to play an old fuddy duddy, in a walker with all kinds of skills...so be it.

Then, the dice decide your fate; promotion, skills, career changes, etc... (keep in mind, in the old books, 1/2 the characters died in generation)...

Then, in conjunction with the GM, you create the background based on your rolls....

It's simple in concept, but, a bit complicated in practice.

At least that's how I see how the traveller chargen should be run...

In reply to gygax101 (msg # 3):

Agreed, I'd def. have char gen go along those lines.

I know there'd be occupations I'd want to go for and such, though yes, the dice-gods might want to disagree ;) I think personally to avoid bad things happening I'd likely stick to be a 30 year old character like 99% of the Imperium at any time ;)

True...concerning age...however, that should be left up to the player...

There's nothing better than an old (50+) crusty merchant captain, who smokes a half-lit cigar and wheezes along on the bridge...;-)

Re: Mongoose traveller

Nice memories...

Makes me wanna play the excellent Chthonian Stars for Mongoose Traveller too... Great game, essentially Trav with the same roughly hard scifi setting as the movie Event Horizon :)

Re: Mongoose traveller

There's a couple of elements needed...

Hard scifi...not space opera stuff, I don't mind a "high goal", but, and as I think the original traveller was designed...a crew that had to deal with the "basics", a new filtration system for their life support...or, should we buy the 1/2 ton of gems or put in the triple turret... or can we afford to buy refined fuel...;-(  that sort of stuff...

The original traveller was much like 1st edition AD&D...damn hard. But, if you survived and persevered...you'd be rewarded...

The other part..GMs...there's Gms out there that are running 2-4-6 games. Honestly, I run one game, and although I do a large amount of on-the-fly...it's alot of work...Unless someone has complete freetime, and no other obligations, I just can't see doing justice to a game without suffering some sort of burn-out.

Anyways...any potential GMs out there?

Re: Mongoose traveller

Maybe.

Mostly I'm worried about the posting requirement. I'd like to be able to post 5 times a week, but with my current job overtime is not just a risk, its a way of life. So I'd like to try for 5 posts a week, but with the understanding that it might end up being just 3, and occasionally 1.

Other than that, though, I'm game. I've just started my vacation, so I should have the free time needed to roll up a sector in relatively short order.

Re: Mongoose traveller

As tempted as I am, I'm thinking that those that have responded would need a "guaranteed" 4-5 posting a week...No worries, i know RL is the big time constraint...

In reply to gygax101 (msg # 9):

I could pretty much assure it, though obviously there'd need to be a GM to run the campaign...

Re: Mongoose traveller

Had to marshal my thoughts and review my resources...

But, I'd be willing to try another Traveller game. The one criterion that I don't meet is only running 1 or 2 games. I currently run several, but they are quite varied. However, I also have lots of time, so I can post 2 or 3 times a day usually. The drawback is waiting for others to post, which is further complicated by differing time zones.

As far as sectors/subsectors, there are so many out there that there really isn't any need to generate one on your own. The problem is deciding which one to use.

Anyone have a preference?

Re: Mongoose traveller

Alright then...no preferences location wise, perhaps something near the solomani rim? That should provide for some interesting backstories...

Re: Mongoose traveller

I like the Darrians and wouldn't mind playing one, so anywhere near there could be good... Thats the Spinward Marches, though I guess we're both talking sectors in The Imperium and if I did play a Darrian (it's not cemented) I could play an Exile.

Re: Mongoose traveller

Okay, given those two parameters so far, I looked at several sectors. Spinward Marches was an obvious one, but it only really satisfied one of those parameters, and made the other one a bit... difficult to accommodate.

Also considered, Ley Sector, Glimmerdrift Reaches, Verge, Beyond, and Reaver's Deep. It's this last one that seems to be the best option. Touches Solomani Sphere, and isn't too unreasonable for a Darrian to be there.

So Reaver's Deep it is.

I'll set up the game later today.

Re: Mongoose traveller

Reaver's Deep is an old favorite and there are a number of classic Keith Brothers adventures set in the Deep.

Re: Mongoose traveller

Yep. Got them all. Just wish they'd been able to do more of the environment books like they'd planned.

Game is up and ready to go.
