Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

Having picked it up months ago on a Steam Sale, I finally got around to playing Shadowrun Returns (am halfway through Dragonfall right now) and am hooked.

Looking around RPoL several editions are in use so it seems to be a system that not everyone agrees improves in every iteration, which makes it a bit tricky for me to do any kind of shopping. It depends what the GM wants to run as to what I will play.

So my request is simple, a game of Shadowrun - whichever edition the GM wants. I would like solo to assist with my learning, but it seems very group-orientated so that might not work. I don't mind Adult and it seems appropriate.

I hope I am not violating the ToU but from skimming through a book at my local store (I think it was 4e, 5e seems to be pdf only atm) an Elven Gunslinger Adept would be the type of character I would like to try, or Covert Ops type. Stealth and Guns with a bit of social pretty much :)

About me: I have been around here for.. *Googles first airing of Smile Time* wow, 10 years. I mostly play Dungeons and Dragons and other d20 derivatives though have been branching out of late into other systems to give them a go.

Hope I hear from a GM soon!

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

While I will respectfully disagree with many people's opinion the SR gets better with ever iteration, I will say its a fun game and an awesome setting.

I have an adult rated 3rd edition game set up if you are interested.  if you have any questions for me you can contact me through the game.

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

I was missing a not before everyone, which makes all the difference.

I had a look, but I don't feel comfortable making a whole team of characters. Thanks for the thought though.

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure how practical a solo SR game would be.  Truly solo runners aren't really going to be achieving anything, and I think having a team of NPCs doing their fair share of the planning (ie, most of it) would take a lot of the game's fun away.

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

Fair enough. I was floating the idea of solo but did admit I didn't know if feasible.

So knowing it'll have to be a group game (with other players), anyone up for that?

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

If it's the anniversary edition of 4th edition (the only one I know ^_^;) I'd certainly be up for playing, yes.  GMing is sadly beyond my skillset.  =(

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

I only know 4e, too, and not too well. Also, I'm not really up to date on what's going on in the world anymore, been a while. But I'd be up for a game. I'll probably need help with building a char though.

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

So that's 3 players for a 4e game, any GM willing to give us a go?

While I have a few for 4e, I have no preference if it gets me a game :)

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

Hmm, I'd be willing to have a go at running a 4e game for the three of you.  I've run it before, but only tabletop - it might take a few experiments to get the hang of pacing it for PbP.  Sound fair?

Also I'll say now that I tend to run 4e fairly meatspace.  Don't expect a hacker to be able to remote access secure systems from miles away - if something is supposed to be secure, I'm the sort to say it's still using wires somewhere.

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

Sounds great to me!

No problem experimenting getting it to work on rpol, I'll be just as experimental trying to make a character. No rush getting everything up and ready, likely wouldn't be until the weekend that I'll have had time to pick up a copy of the book and see how everything works.

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

I'll get something set up soon so people can discuss characters then.  Will Mature be okay?

As for books, I've got the core (not the Anniversary Edition, though I'm aware of all the errata that's included), Arsenal, Street Magic, Augmentation and Runner's Companion.  It sounds like you'll probably all just be building out of the Core though, which is fine :) I'm quite happy to talk people through character generation - although be warned that SR generation can take a lot of time.  Especially doing equipment.

One thing I will ask is that people avoid taking disadvantages which are entirely irrelevant to them though.  I've seen enough mages with increased essence penalties from the cyberware they'll never have to last a lifetime.

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

I'm partial to Adult instead of Mature, but that's just me.

Hmm... I've only ever used the Anniversary Edition.  Is it just 4e core with errata, or do I need to unlearn the "updated" version?  =X

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

After waiting several days, it occurred to me that you might be waiting on me.. if so, yes a core only game sounds good. I'm fine with Mature or Adult; Adult is preferred so I don't have to worry about accidently crossing the imaginary line between Mature and Adult. Don't worry, I don't planning on sexing up everyone I see.

Making sure disadvantages actually are disadvantageous are a problem in every point based system, some stand out more than others, such as the mage restricting their cyberware.

Re: Shadowrun Newbie looking for a game

Somewhere between that and taking a little time to think things over since I had until the weekend anyway!  I've put the game up at link to another game

I've gone with Adult for now since you both requested it and it's my personal preference too (I'm sure you both know what that means I'll need in the RTJ).  That said if I manage to get hold of Lwaxy and (s)he's not okay with adult for some reason I'll drop it down to Mature.
