LF: Game based on Cosplayers in another world

I had been in a game that was called recently and would be interested in playing my character from that in another game. Premise had been that a bunch of cosplayers end up in a game multi-world, where props and costumes become real.

I had really been looking forward to it, but after 3 false starts the GM has called it and I am now looking to see if I can try and play my character elsewhere.

Im not sure how well a cosplayer who gains the abilities of the character they are dressed as would work in your game...

Still looking. I can do other systems but would like to not have to change my character. I can do mature(would prefer it really) or adult games as well.

What are you willing to play? Do you want a world exactly like that? Are you willing to compromise to get into a game?

Re: Game died: Looking for M&M 2nd ed game

Still looking, I would prefer M&M for a system, but I am open to others, but so far suggested or offered games just will not work.

Again, the character is a normal cosplayer, who ends up changing into the character they are dressed as, with variances of course. I would prefer that they end up video game world hopping too, as that was the story line I was looking forward to.

Yes and no, as there is only one costume involved. And I had to look up the show you referenced, as I was not familiar with it.

Re: Game died: Looking for M&M 2nd ed game

I am not sure that would work.... not with the idea laid out in the first post, which I try and clear up.

Cosplayers, people who dress up as a character from books, movies, anime, comic books, cartoons, or even based around an idea like steam punk. Hundreds of them attend conventions every year. At one such convention, everything seems normal until a rushed wrong turn, aa strange panel not in the guide, or even just a flash from a photo shoot transports (one or more) cosplayer(s) to a world hub, where the many realities of the game, anime, movie, cartoon, book and concept worlds intersect. Foam and cardboard armor and props become what they represent, the costume having become real and changing their wearer slightly with them. Faced with being IN the settings their costumes come from, as well as many others, how will they fair, will they try to get home, or make a life for themselves where they can be the hero?

And no, I am not going to run this, I WANT to play, which is why it is posted here. I will be more than willing to help a gm get set up, as I have a fairly large wealth of knowledge, but! I love the mystery and suspense and the fun of not knowing what is coming next.

Re: Game died: Looking for M&M 2nd ed game

I think I'd be on board as a player. Self obsessed costumed thugs who actually gain super powers/weapons/whatever could be fun. I do, however, dislike M&M, as I found it far too grindy and fiddly for me. Trying this in something like Marvel Heroic (sans IP), Savage Worlds, OpenD6, or even in freeform might be more my style. M&M was just too D&D for me.

Although I'll be a nitpicking jerk and point out that the word cosplay is a contentious term, since it is specifically identified as a uniquely Japanese phenomena dealing with Japanese media, and specifically incorporating a form of roleplaying. I don't include comics, movies, steampunk, western video games, historical reenactment, or other kinds of costume into this term, as they often lack those Japanese origins and roleplaying aspect. And yes, I know that cosplaying came out of a Japanese reflection of Trekkies, but it developed into its own that that is wholly different from what a prop builder or a historical fashion designer does, even if they too wear their product.  This has come after many years of working within the anime community and with media shows and seeing key differences in behaviour and attitude towards costumes and hobbies. /rant

Re: Game died: Looking for M&M 2nd ed game

Cosplay is no longer limited to the genre's you stated, just look at how Frozen and Dr Who cosplayers have exploded in numbers over the years for example.

That being said, I have said, I DON'T MIND SHIFTING TO A DIFFERENT SYSTEM. But, I outlined the concept already, If you don't like the term Cosplay, then don't use it, but it is THE best way to describe what I am looking for, and why I posted this request in the first place. I myself am a Cosplayer and Crossplayer, so I would like if you could spare me the same respect you give to any decent person and not try to derail my request.

Re: Game died: Looking for M&M 2nd ed game

I wasn't trying to derail the request, since it looks like it could make an enjoyable game. I was just pointing out that cosplay is a very loaded term, and that it is going to draw that kind of response. As a replica prop builder, Japanese scholar, and former events planner, I know the term well and have identified a wide range of activities that don't fit into the same mold. Trying to use cosplay as an umbrella term is painting with too broad of storkes, but that doesn't mean that this game idea doesn't have merit.

This has nothing to do with the idea laid out. And if you were a builder, scholar and planner, you would know that the term cosplay was coined in 1983 at a USA convention, granted by a japanese man, and the idea of dressing up like characters from books, and other media has been in the USA since 1912. Japan just took it to another level.

Re: Game died: Looking for M&M 2nd ed game

Well I would run it, but limited time and all that. Since there are no takers for the zelda game, if people are still willing I will start it after my kids go back to their mothers. If I still think I have time for it and no one else has opted for it I can try it.

They go back on August 3.

I am familiar with Pokemon Tabletop united, I have read FATE and FATE accelerated. The only part of 3rd edition D&D to give me issues is monster gen. lets see I have read Risus, and I have some Ptolus book o.0

Will any of those work? Is it ok if limited to a single game world? I have a story where abilities and skills and such are mostly defined by charms on a bracelet, but that's a little different and the game is not set up yet.

And if you knew that much about costumes and history, you'd know that this is an extremely loaded term that is prone to upsetting people. Like any label or pigeon hole, you need to be careful how you use it, rather than forcing it on those who don't want it nor identify with it. It doesn't matter how old costumes are; what matters is that you're inaccurately using a Japanese term and specific hobby as a blanket for those who don't identify with it, and then getting offended when someone called you on it.

As I've already said, the game idea sounds like fun, but the negative label you insist on is putting me off. If that's central to your idea, I'll be passing. It's as simple as that.

Instead of arguing, just drop it. Honestly it's just a ready known term. If it bothers you so much, no need to bash others over it. Just avoid the thread...

I would ask why you are so worked up over it, but it does not matter here.

So... still looking for a gm eh?

In reply to Merevel (msg # 20):

Not sure pokemon would work. Fate would be alright, but I have seen a lot of people turned off by it. 3rd wouldn't work(too much structure). Risus and Ptolus I am not familiar with at all. Freeform would also be workable too, and would allow for the flexibility that a game like this would be(I think).

As for worlds, I don't mind single world at a time, but I was looking forward to visiting different game worlds and settings as well, going from say... The mushroom kingdom to Kingdom hearts to say Resident Evil and even things like The Sims and then maybe Middle Earth(LotR). Limiting it to one world would be a little like kingdom hearts only letting you explore destiny islands.

Re: Game died: Looking for M&M 2nd ed game

Very fair point. Hmm, ok, I get what you mean. And I see why some of those rule systems are a very bad idea for this type of game. Free form would work better then most of what I know.

I am not familiar with ptolus and have no idea where it came from, it is just in my rpol folder o.0

World hopping, I know another game on rpol using a similar premise(of world hoping), but using anime based worlds from what little I was part of it.
