Very experiential nWoD game

I'd love to play in a nWoD game that really focused on the transition from human to something more/less/other. The game would be about making the choice to try and hold on to your human ties in an increasingly distant world, or the pain of having to sever them. It would be about alienation and transcending (or losing) your humanity.

It would, by nature, be very personal for the players, focused on their individual journeys rather than sectarian politics (though that could certainly play a part).

Basically everyone makes a base mortal character. A full and complete more-or-less normal person. Someone, importantly, with human hopes and dreams, careers, family, friends. Ties that will be difficult or impossible to maintain later, because this game is about choice and loss.

As the players are inducted into the world of the supernatural, it will be up to the GM to make those ties difficult to maintain, and to contrast the "normality" of their old lives, with the dramatic cinematic dynamism of their new lives.

While the players may be a pack/cabal/coterie/whatever, the story is more about their individual progression from human to 'other'. They can act in concert or individually to solve their problems, though how together they are should be a function of the ST's campaign theme.

I could see this working with Vampre, Mage, or Werewolf. Know the others somewhat less. It could also work very well with a "mystery" variation, where no one knows what they're going to be until it happens.

Importantly, though, they only have as much control over the process as their characters do. The players do not choose who sires them, or how they awaken, or what their tribes are; that's up to the moon/towers/vampire (in other words, the GM). Players should be cool to roll with that.

I would also like to avoid "mixed type" games, unless the players generally don't interact/aren't part of the same group.

Re: Very experiential nWoD game

I am running a God Machine sandbox game, and think the type of story you want is very possible for your individual character. Other characters will be starting in their chosen templates, but that does not stop me running a personal transformation story for you. Check it out, if this sounds interesting to you.

I'll check it out, but I'm still looking for this exact thing if someone's running it.

Re: Very experiential nWoD game

I'd also be interested in this kind of game. A lot of nWoD games I've seen have a pre-unified cabal/coterie/pack living in the same house with no external responsibilities or interests.

I've yet to see a World of Darkness game that is about going through unknowable supernatural changes, hiding your new secrets from your family/friends/co-workers, and protecting yourself from the monsters you suddenly realise are out there and far better informed than you.

Joining a sandbox with this kind of concept doesn't really work. A theme like this needs a GM dedicated to maintaining that tone of uncertainty and mystery; a GM who will make your wife ask where you have been all night, and tempt you to solve your problems with powers you don't understand, and provide consequences to every decision which reach further than the immediate success or failure of a skill test.

This seems fun so long as its not a case of living every second of every day IC. I tried that and it did not go well...I got bored. If things move quickly and something is always happening, I would love to play.

Re: Very experiential nWoD game

I've been interested in playing a game of vampire like this for a very, very long time. If that was to happen and an ST needed more players to round things out, I'd be interested.

Re: Very experiential nWoD game

I ran one of these in the past, and I rather want to try one again in the future. I agree that running a cross-template game in this way might be a little too ambitious, but I've always wanted to revisit Mage: The Awakening, or perhaps Changeling or Geist.

Mage would be cool.

Re: Very experiential nWoD game

Changeling would be a very different proposition than Mage or Vampire. You'd basically have to run a Durance setting, with the Changelings existing in Faerie and having to cope with living in a True Fey's hollow at the same time as their own changing natures... it sounds awesome, but doesn't really fit with the OP's idea.

I'm only familiar with Geist conceptually, but that's the one with the possession? Sounds like a good basis, since the other transformations tend to be rather immediate, rather than having your personality slowly change to match your new powers... or you could do Princess: The Hopeful?

I disagree. The stint in Faerie could be very short, at least in terms of how much of the game is centered there. All that really needs to be established is the type of True Fae master that is holding the player captive, the sort of servitude they are fulfilling, and how they escape back to the real world. Once that chapter is over, then the game could concentrate on how the player reintegrates back into the world, much like in Flight of the Navigator.

Re: Very experiential nWoD game

I have the beginning stages of a game in progress. I am still deciding between a Mage or Werewolf game, with some modifications to the underlying cosmology. I have a setting in mind, but am still writing things for locations, local personalities, and so forth. Hopefully, the players can help along with that. :)

Re: Very experiential nWoD game

For anyone still following this thread and interested:

I am currently running a NWoD game that is about to transition to the God-Machine Chronicle rules update. It is, therefore, a good time to bring in new players.

I'm not sure if it will fit your exact specifications. However, transitioning from normal life to extraordinary life is currently a very big theme, and it will probably remain such for a while. In particular, choosing which ties to cut, if any, will soon be an important story point, as in, within the next chapter.

There is no particular splat anyone is set into, though the direction I intend to go is starting to solidify and I'm sure everyone has their suspicions.

Also, I am not the world's fastest poster, since Real LifeTM often gets in the way. I do try to warn my players when slow periods are beginning.

If this interests anyone, you may take a look at the game here: link to another game

Note that it is rated A for Adult, because Adult things can have happen(ed).
