The imperial strategist reports:

The old Duke's units make the first serious move. In a quick action, his jumpships shimmer into existence over Parallax. It appears the old man is loathe to risk any of his precious relatives in this war.

Lortran attack

9 units (2 Psychic Veterans, 2 Amazonians, Nuclear Arsenal, Damper Field, 2 House Troops)

Parralax defenders:
1 noble (Lord Corinus Dacklin)
5 units (2 Pilgrim Troupes, Warrior Priests, 2 Mercenaries)

* Nuclear exchange phase:
Lortran decides to start incinerating the industrial world of Parallax from orbit. Some damage on the industrial infrastructure of the planet is scored, along with an unit of the space pilgrims.

* Psi phase:
The Warrior priests unleash their inenr power, summoning a psionic blast. The Psychic veterans, unused to combat from the long period of peace, fail to thwart the psychic onslaught.

* First strike Phase:
The Lortran units disembark, right into the teeth of a furious Lord Dacklin, who leads an unit of Merceanries right into the landing zone. However, the teamwork of the invading troops is flawless, and there is no space for the lone unit to inflict heavier casualties on the attackers.

* Regular attack phase:
The Lortran units strike out towards the defenders. Barely visible psychic veterans fight alongside tall goddesses clad in reflective armor. Another unit of the Pilgrims takes the brunt of the attack, the pilgrims returning to their Source.
The counterattack is devastating to the Lortran, snuffing the lives of two house guard troops.

* Psi phase:
The Lortran noble finally summoned up enough Psi force to unleash the ultimate form of attack he mastered - but the fiendish Lortran psychic veterans formed a barrier that dissipated that attack into harmelss electrical arcs. The warrior priests had better luck, summoning an unopposed Molecular Disruption effect.

*First strike phase:
Lord Dacklin leads his Mercenaries into another firefight, this time against the Lortran flank. The attack slices straight through an unit of Psychic veterans, leaving dead and charred camo-suited soldiers in the wake of Dacklin's fury.

*Regular attack:
Lortran units finally pin down the elusive Kadesh defenders in narrow streets and in factory halls. Two units if Kadesh mercenaries perish, with the so recently victorious Lord Dacklin barely getting away with his life.
The Kadesh resistance all but falters at this point, with no casualties inflicted on the Lortran despite about equal firepower.

*Psi phase
The attmepts of the Kadesh to summon up a molecular disruption field is again thwarted by the single unit of remaining Psychic veterans.

*FS phase
Finally the Kadesh noble displays the leadership skills expected of him. Striding confidently over bleeding and dismemebered corpses of camo-clad vetearns and pitifully twisted and broken Amazonians, he leads his single remaining unit towards victory. There is but a single unit of Amazonians left to contest the planet...

*Regular attack phase
The Amazonians buckle under pressure, unable to finish off the noble-led unit of warior priests. They retreat towards the landing point, in a vain hope that organizing a last stand among the burnt buildings will save them. The charred, dull glint of their by now worn and damaged armor marking the attack point for the final assault of the Kadesh.

*Psi phase
The Kadesh manage to produce a middling psionic blast effect. This should be more than enough to wipe out the remaining oposition, however.

*First strike phase
The inevitable end for the Lortran invasion comes quickly. The few remaining Amazonians are taken by a surprise attack, stunned by the psionic blast; some commit suicide to avoid a fate worse than death. The rest are not as lucky, and many a Kadesh officer ended the day with a brainwashed Amazonian as the newest sex toy.

The jumpships retreat back into Lortran space. The failure of Lortran forces is a bitter one. Perhaps the Duke has lost his edge over the years.

Even though this strategist does not believe in TechnoFate, its strands shimmer all over Gurati space, and bring chaos into the predictable game the great Houses are playing. A member of the Gurati nobility deserts, going over to the Lortran. Lady Elleanora Gurati, in an unanticipaded move, took off from the Gurati stronghold in her private ship and arrived on Lortran bare days later, to offer her... services. A fellow named Stanton was instrumental in the flyover, providing gate codes and security passes. His origin, aims, or even his House remain unknown.

The Arms Dealers, ever a fickle bunch, for some reason again fall to the innuendos of a Gurati noble, and thus change their side in the war yet again.

At least this small victory remains to the Gurati, who are otherwise quite cramped and with few resources to call their own.

The Nitrix make a move towards Kadesh space as well. This might be a well construed deception, too.

The Jumpship arrived outside the barren system with no more fuss than any other jump, and made its way towards the third rock from that sun.
It was a barren world, in that it contained no wealth, no habitable worlds, and nothing of interest.  None of the Great, or minor, Houses had invested any resources into that space, including surveillance.

Which made it the perfect for this meeting.

"Fire up the Deflection coats, and bring the short-range sensors on line", ordered the captain.  He trusted his superiors, indeed, but it was the other Great House he was here to meet that he didn't trust.
But so long as the negotiation, and transfer of merchandise went successfully, and smoothly, they would be on their way back into Gurati space within two cycles.

Duke Tycho Lortran studied the newly arrive Gurati noblewoman with narrowed eyes.  Can I trust this woman? he wondered.  Has she truly risked so much to flee her house, or is this all a ploy?  He ponders what to do silently for a few more moments before speaking.  "Welcome to Lortran,  Lady Elleanora.  I hope your journey here was no more unpleasant than necessary.  I am sure the Baron is none too happy with your departure.  Nor will he be pleased with me for welcoming you.  But such are the risks we must all take in these troubled times.  So again, I welcome you."

The Lady seems about to reply but the Duke raises a hand to stop her.  "You will forgive me if I say I cannot spare time to chat at the moment.  As you may have heard, this war is no longer just a cold one.  Our forces struck at Parallax, and were repelled.  There is much preparation to be done, as I am sure the Countess will not wait long to make her counterstrike.  I had expected your Baron to mass forces on Aquaria, keeping the Countess pinned on that flank.  But he's showing uncharacteristic restraint.  In my old age, I seem to be loosing the knack of judging people, it seems."

Not a knack I can afford to loose when a Gurati noblewoman arrives on my doorstep! Tycho thinks to himself.

"I regret your stay here on Lortran will be a short one.  I need you to travel to Sanctuary.  Baron Marcos will brief you on how you can best help us once are there."

Once again Lady Elleanora seems about to speak.  This time it is the firm grip of an Amazonian on her shoulder that interrupts her.  "Please, come this way.  M'lady," says the towering woman, as Duke Tycho turns his attention back to his maps.

Lord Dacklin was the hero of the hour; though he wished he could enjoy the feeling more. He’d won a victory, but neither Paralax nor his troops were unscathed. Frankly, before this battle he’d but his trust in professional troops of the Mercenary Guild, and while they’d sold their lives dearly it was Harrion’s priests who had carried the day. In hindsight, he shouldn’t have been surprised; the mercenaries were good, but they were outnumbered by troops just as experienced as them, and they were only human; the Warrior Priests were psychics. His forces were still processing prisoners from the battle; unfortunately, they were still processing casualties, too. Several pilgrim ships had been wiped out in a Lortran nuclear strike on one of Parlax’s larger spaceports, and more had been killed on the ground. He’d heard their songs of mourning earlier that day. Irulan wouldn’t like that the Pilgrims were dying, but many more were likely to die before the war was over. The surviving Mercenaries seemed to have reacted less; they were mourning their comrades, but they’d known when they signed up that sector-wide war was going to be devastating. At least the survivors were collecting their bonuses. And they’d showed Lortran; the others would think twice before attacking again. Or would they? Interrogation of captured Lortran troopers hadn’t yielded any info on their future plans yet.

An interesting little snippet from an assassination came into our hands, and we include it here for your viewing pleasure. It was a dull season, after all.

Lady Elleanora Gurati sat on the newest jumpship of the Lortran, en route from Lortran to Sanctuary. It was a fine, sleek vessel, painted in the greens and blues of a Navy squadron. The young woman was less than pleased at the reception in her new house. To be honest, the strands of TechnoFate that led to this decision had been difficult to follow. But joining the Lortran seemed to be a decision that had to be made. After all, she had to escape from Castille's shadow somehow. She'll show them all. She'll make a name for herself, and conquer Gurati planets with ease using all the insider knowledge. Castille, the fool, will be brought before her in chains and tatters, and she shall savor that moment.

There was a slight prickling sensation on her arm, and she looked up at the unfamiliar attendant - a young girl of no more than fourteen. Faint telltale signs of retinal implants flashed in the young girl's irises. The ex-Gurati noble frowned. Only the Imperial secret police uses such implants... And they are an ally of the Gurati.


The rest of the recording shows the unfortunate noble in agony, the specially tailored nanotech neurotoxin quickly and irreversibly destroying all the neural synapses in her body. It took almost a minute before she finally died.

Apart from this action, the Gurati were content to amass their uints and improve their economy.

The Lortran also shuffled their growing armies, with no definitive attacking move planned. It seems the shock of a lost battle forced them into inactivity.

Kadesh plans this season amounted to little more too.

Prelate Longinus joins the Nitrix cause, after being expelled from the Church of Man for undiscloses offenses. Rumors have it that only the Nitrix woudl harbor him, considering the vile and unspeakable things he did in a neighboring sector.

Castille Gurati watched the vid of Elleanora's death with grim mirth.

It broke his heart to have acted against family like that; but her betrayal could not be left unanswered.   Thankfully, Tyson had noted her absence almost immediately, and had begun tracking her private craft with swift efficiency.  And Drake had moved quickly to organize the Police.   The family had come together in response her Elle's decision.

As the footage wound to its end, he turned to the scribe to his left, "Take this down, and get it broadcast without delay ...".

Duke Tycho looked over the papers on his desk.  The "condolences" from Baron Gurati caused him to frown deeply.  I had expected such a strike, but not so soon.  The Baron's spies are more dangerous than I realized.  I must keep a closer eye on him.

He then glanced to another letter, from a certain Count Hubert Donovan.  Tycho smiles sadly as he reads it over.  It would seem this Ellonora had an...admirer on Sanctuary.  Perhaps the baron's attack will bring me more than it managed to take away?  I can only pray that this fellow doesn't meet the same fate.

Finally, he turns to a third document, this one lacking any of the flowery prose of the others.  Copies of orders for troop movements and changes in command structures.  The duke nods silently.  Yes, this will be most satisfactory.

Countess Irulan Kadesh prayed. There was nothing else left to do; the preparations were made, the weapons obtained, the jumpships moving. She had competent people commanding elite troops; indeed, more than human troops when the Brotherhood of Machines was taken into account. Everything she could do was done; at least until the battle, the future of her house was out of her hands now. She couldn't say she necessarily liked the feeling.

The Imperial Sages report:

There is much to report this season, as the season of blood starts.

Gurati amass a sizable army, ready to strike at their neighbors. No real offensive move is made, though.

Count Donovan, the newest noble to flock to the Lortran banner, is a tall man with hard eyes and an unsmiling face. He retreated a decade ago to Sanctuary during a moneylending scandal, and his involvement with a certain Gurati noble was well known.  A return to politics, howeever, opens up the possibility of old enemies coming back to cash in past debts.


Lortran jumpships materialize over Mox, quickly passing the arther surprised sentry stations and landing in the midst of its sparkling, grandiose city. Only the few miners left on the planet offered token resistance, and these were wiped out by the conquerors with no casualties whatsoever. The gain of Mox' mines will surely swell the Lortran coffers.


The second Lortran attack was directed againt the Kadesh. For all his age and wisdom, this seems a dubious move. Fighting a two front war is a sure way to ruin one's House.

Nuclear exchange phase: No nuclear arsenals present

Psi phase: A Sisteria assistant to the Kadesh, a pretty blue-haired girl of barely nine years, collapses during psychic preparation, blood flowing from her ears, eyes and nostrils. Unnerved by such a bad omen, the first death of this conflict, only a minor effect is summonned up by the Kadesh Champion.

First strike phase (K:3+1): The sole Kadesh noble leads his warrior priests into the teeth of the dismounting army, in a reactment of the last conflict. A unit of Heretics perishes before knowing what hit them.

Regular combat phase (L:14 K:13): The Lortran troops do well, methodically wiping out the pilgrims along with the single unit of mercenaries and a group of cyber-enhanced clone soldiers. Gone are the set-piece attempts of the last invasion, with endless drawn out firefights. Now the Lortran rush in, taking care of business quickly and brutally. This tactic costs them dearly, however, as they lose four heretics and a house troop, leaving their core units unprotected.

Psi phase: The Lortran Psychic veterans efficiently extinguish an attempt by Corinus to summon up destructive energies. Lightning flashes and the area is abthed in darkness as they clash.

First strike: the tactical advantage gained by the Kadesh is squandered by bad judgment. The weight of commanding the garrison in the face of a determined assault almost buckles Lord Dacklin's resolve.

Regular combat (L:10 K:7): It seems, all that is really left at this point to secure a Lortran win here is a noble to lead their troops. Alas, they have none, and it shows. In confused close quarters fighting in the tunnels beneath the capital, only one unit of Kadesh clone soldiers perishes. One unit of psychic veterans perishes in the fight, incinerated while held down by the already dead clones.

Psychic phase: Only a minor effect as the result of the warrior priest's effort, a psionic blast. Could it be enough to shift the balance of power now?

First strike phase: Tracking down the waves of psychic interference, Lord Dacklin and his warrior priests track down the remaining unit of psychic veterans. The resulting battle is short and bloody, leaving dead Lortran everywhere.

Regular combat (L:6 K:5): Suddenly it seems amazonian soldiers are everywhere. Tall, beautiful women clad in anachronistic armour and wielding energy weapons simply walk all over the remaining defenders; those who don't submit are rent apart by energy whips and seeking arrows with thermite warheads. The lose half of their number in this last push - but the prize is theirs. The planet at their mercy, its noble defender in chains at their feet.

Now, they take revenge for the enslavement of their comrades.

Final result: Lortran win.

The Lortran were active on the diplomatic plan as well. General Marcos was seen on the Lortran home planet, escorted by a honour guard of Amazonian princesses. Shortly after he retired from the public eyes, the announcement came that the Imperial Army would grant its support to House Lortran.


Kadesh moves as well. The Lortran attack against Parralax intercepted one flank of their effort that was directed against Punah. The other half of the invasion force arrives shortly after Lortran jumpships left.

Nuclear attack phase: The defending nuclear arsenals flill the skies above the verdant planet with starfire. Much of this nuclear fury is absorbed by damper fields, but one ship is caught in a vortex of ardiation, killing all aboard instantly. Captain Caroline Kadesh is among the casualties.

Psi phase (K:5 L:2+2): The Kadesh, aided by their Sisteria allies, summon up huge psychic forces (Telekenetic Maelstrom, Molecular Disruption and Dimensional Rift, for a total of 9 AD!), while the Lortran struggle to organize defeneses. Only Duchess Catherine managed to put up a Psionic Blast (1 AD).

First strike (K:21 dice, lolwut? L: 8): The Lortran meet the overwhelming attack head-on. They even put up a hard fight, clustered around their nobles. Kadesh warrior priests and imperial conscripts perish in the withering crossfire of skillfully camouflaged defenders. But, their joy is short lives as shiny Death Machines led by the Kadesh nobles descend into the jungles, and turn verdant forest into charred wasteland. No defending unit survives this conflagration.

The fate of the Lortran prisoners remains unclear, and probably up to the present Kadesh nobles.

Result: Kadesh victory.

The Nitrix manage to attract the attention of another noble as well. Lady Elsbeth Dawnspear is the scion of a small noble family, looking to expand her connections and influence. Evil tongues accuse her of consorting with the Silexian Surgeons, and go so afr as to accuse her of providing them with numerous test subjects from her fief.


Lord Nitrix makes a move as well. The approach he takes is alltogether different from the others, however. This is in part dictated by his available troops and planets. Nitrix jumpships appear over Sedeen, expecting heavy reistance.

Nuclear phase: both combatants pull the stops on their arsenals. The Nitrix choose to to turn the hive world into a nuclear inferno. A pirate jumpships perishes, caught too close to a blast, but the Nitrix force is otherwise unschated. Sedeen, on the other hand, is wiped clean of defending units, along with most other living organisms. It will cost a fortune to restore the planet to the semblance of something inhabitable. Consenquently, the nitrix choose not to claim it.



A lone, empty Nitrix jumpship appears in the skies above Mox and is promptly blotted out by a strike from the Lortren nuclear arsenal stationed there.

Countess Kadesh was still stunned. Maybe a more experienced leader like Harrion or Duke Lortran would have seen the Nitrix attack coming, but it never occurred to her that they would so completely destroy Sedeen, a hive world that was one of the most densely populated worlds in the sector. Now, she had to scramble to protect her worlds from more nuclear attacks. But they'd prevail, they had to.

So, Sedeen.

The troops there are obviously Nitrix.  But it's without a House marker ('N' 5/3) because Nitrix doesn't claim it, and Kadesh has obviously lost it??  (was the latter automatic, or did she have the choice?)


And if anyone claims it, do they HAVE to suffer a -22 Solats each round, or does the place simply generate 0 Solats, and requires 22 'Income' actions just to get it back to that '0' value?

So much death, so much destruction.  The duke sadly shakes his head as he reads the reports.  Even an entire planet burned to ash.  Will there be anything left to rule once this conflict is over?  Tycho let out a pained sigh.

"Tell the troops to keep Lord Dacklin comfortable," he said to a waiting aid.  "There is no need for further bloodshed at this point.  Let us hope that the Countess extends the same consideration to Catherine and Carley.  Despite the bloodshed we have seen this cycle, we are not savages.  I will begin negotiations with the Countess over a prisoner exchange shortly.  Prepare my ship."

"Of course, m'lord," says the aid, bowing out of the room.

The baron is the driver's seat at this point.  He has shown an uncharacteristic amount of restraint so far.  By staying out of the fight until now, he's amassed a sizable force.  The question is, which way will he strike?  The duke frowned as the possibilities ran through his head.  I am getting far too old for this.

11- Questions/Issues:
   1.  I think either one of my two income actions on Sanctuary got missed, or the
       effects of my allies weren't taken into account.  Even if the error from the
       previous round wasn't fixed (though it looks like it was, as Punah's income
       was increased), Sanctuary would still be boosted 4 income to 8 due to 2
       noble actions with +1 due to my allies.  My forces are spread very thin just
       now, so making sure I get credit for the allies bonus would really help!

   2.  Looks like the heretics didn't get their +1 and first strike bonus during
       the fight on parallax.  I sort of figured/hoped they would if the pilgrims
       were there.  Was that an errror, or are the Inquisitors the only church
       units that we'll be able to see in this particular game (since the planet
       that makes templars isn't in it this time around)?

   3.  Just as a heads up, my war academy ally will give any imperial shock troops
       I make +1 AD, which could quite possibly come up on Sanctuary this round,
       or in the near future.

   4.  The fight write-up said there was one amazonian unit left on Parallax, and
       the map seems to agree with this, but the table doesn't seem to list any
       units there.  Am going to assume the amazonians are there, but thought I'd
       point it out in case that messes up your spreadsheet at all.

   5.  Keep up the good work, I'm having a blast!  There's tons of rules and numbers
       to keep track of in this game, so please don't take my nitpicking as
       complaining.  ;)

'So many innocent victims'  the House scribe thought, 'Murdered without a chance.  And a Hive Mind people, too'.
He wondered how it must have felt to those unaware of the nuclear attack, as they shared the fear, pain and confusion of those millions of miles away.
Did they feel the their skin peeling and burning away, without any recognizable cause?   Did they hear the screams of a thousand children on the other side of their planet?

A tear ran down his face.

(OOC: a thunderstorm above as I processed the turn. Computer crashed, map might have glitches. I went ahead and posted instead of redoing it tomorrow.)

The imperial sages report:

Duke Lortran himself visits Sanctuary. He and his small honor guard travel aboard the newest Lortran jumpship, a refitted Imperial cruiser. Scores upon scores of Imperial Shock Troopers stand in perfect formation as the old Duke walks comfortably to meet the seniors of Sanctuary.

Meanwhile, a lone Lortran jumpship winks into existence above Punah. It uses tactics quite unchaarcteristic for the noble Duke's side - nuclear ammunitions are disgorged from its belly, and the sip itself disappears into hyperspace before the nukes impact the planet below.

The effect on the defending troops is meager. One unit of pilgrims disapepars as nuclear warheads pierce into their landed ships and detonate them from within. The nuclear blasts damage Punah's fragile ecology further - where the Kadesh war machines had only incineraetd forests, the Lortran nukes pollute and destroy entire ecosystems. The damage isn't severe enough that it makes Punah unliavble - but is not a long way from doing so.

There is serious unrest amongst the Amazonian princesses on Lortran upon news of this move.

The Kadesh army barely had a dent put into it by the efforts of the Lortran and the Nitrix. A large number of their jumpships shuffles troops around.

As Kadesh forces come back into space above Sedeen, they are greeted by a Nitrix nuclear strike. Fortunately for the Kadesh princess, the Nitrix arsenals were all but expended on Sedeen, leaving only a few warheads to be used on her forces. A wispy, agile Pilgrim spaceship interposes itself, absorbing the nuclear fury that would have otherwise taken a Kadesh jumpship. With that, the Nitrix withdraw from the Sedeen.

Overconfidence proves to be the undoing of Kadesh forces. Two jumpships, packed with troops, make the passage from Punah to Hellish, jsut to be blotted out of the skies by a barrage of nuclear explosions. Nobles commanding Kadesh forces, Sir Willem Calgari and High Priest Julius Kadesh, perish on the spot.

It seems there is no god news for the Kadesh at all. Let us review the news of the attempted recapture of Parralax, by a single jumpship and a handful of cyberentically enhanced clone soldiers.

Defender:

Attacker:

Units: 3x Clone soldiers (machine enhanced)

Neither side has nuclear weapons deployed. The Kadesh jumpship lands unopposed. There are no psychic units.

The initial clash in the densely packed capital city is completely inconclusive. The Clone soldiers seem daunetd by the Amazonians' reputation. Amazonians, demoralized by the destruction of their home world by their feudal lord, seem to not perform to their highest potential.

It is only a matter of time before the numerical superiority of the clone soldiers wins over the skill of Amazonian warriors. Out of supplies, with no support and surrounded on all sides, the proud Amazonian warrior princesses are forced to surrender. Crews of Lortran jumpships, with no friendly star in jump range, make themselves and their ships scarce until a better time arrives. Perhaps life as independent traders will suit them better?

Thus, Parralax chanegs hands again.

The Nitrix move to retake their jewel planet. A lack of nuclear arsenals, or a simple desire to recapture the planet intact kept them from using their usual tactics.

Psi phase: The Prelate conjures up a most powerful attack just to have it shatter against the defenses the psychic veterans put up. The Lady Dawnspear has better luck with a minor efect (+1 AD)

First strike phase: The Nitrix nobles lead their black clad suicide squads into action. Unfortunately, all they manage to accomplish is secure a simple landing site. Lortran units are too elusive to be caught.

Regular combat phase: What follows is a brutal close range fight in the confines of Mox tunnels. This battle is bloodier than most. The miners and two units of Lortran house troops perish; the Nitrix fare worse, with both suicide squads and all house troops falling victim to deadly traps the defenders set.

Psi phase: The Nitrix nobles enjoy no success against the firm blocking power of the psychic veterans.

First strike phase: The remaining Nitrix troops, now accustommed to fighting in the confines of Mox' tunnels, wreak havoc amongst the defenders. Charges placed by suicide squads explode, burying unsuspecting house troopers. Colonial Rangers take out an unit of Heretics; Pirates tear into Psychic veterans, using their melee weapons to great effect.

Regular combat: The single remaining unit of Psychic veterans is unable to affect the result of  this slaughter. They choose to regroup and fortify in an abandoned gem mine.

Psi phase, FS and combat phases (amaaaazing rollss): Perhaps it's the brilliantly lit crystal corridors, the disorienting nature of the myriad reflections, or the Moxian Hyper Brandy - but no acsualties are suffered this turn.

Psi phase: The psychic veterans put up a strong defence against possible Nitrix powers.

First strike phase: The concentration needed for this makes them vulnerable for a moment, and the Colonial Rangers use the moment to break into the fortification. A short firefight later, the remaining veterans surrender.

The research facility had been churning out absurd amounts of nucelar weapons under the watchful eyes of Lord Nitrix himself. The invading fleet was greeted by a short, mocking audio message from the head of the House, before nuclear fire blanketed the skies. It's unlike anything the inhabitants of Dalton had seen before, and they were used to experimental weapons. The first barrage melted harmlessly from the Gurati damper field. The second group of nukes found their targets, however. The Macarbre, Codex and Santana disintegrated, killing all aboard. Leaderless, pressing on was all there was left for the remaining Gurati.

Psi phase: The inquisitors are effective at blockign Nitrix nobles from using their arts.

First strike phase (N:8 G: 8): Imperial death squads and rebels fight side by side - an uneasy alliance against the Nitrix. They are met by Rimspace pirates, led by Nitrix nobles. It si an equal matchup, but the Nitrix side comes out on top. Two rebel units perish in the genetically engineered forests surounding Dalton's university capital.

Regular combat: (N:9 G:12) The rest of the Gurati units land. The sheer number of undisciplined pirates is no match for the precision and efficiency of imperial shock troops. Even so, with one unit of heretics dying stupidly in crossfire, pirates manage to claw down an higly decorated inquisitor and his retinue.

Psi phase: With the stranglehold of the Inquisition broken, the Nitrix draw deep from their sacrificial cups filled with psi-enhancing drugs. A Psionic Blast, Telekenetic Maelstrom, and eevn the dreaded Molecular Disruption Cloud loom over the invading force (+6AD)

First strike phase: (N:8+6 G:4) with the suport of the mighty psychic atatcks, the noble-led pirates easily swamp the remaining Death Squads. Once they are done, their atention turns to the weakest link in the remaining opposition, and the last of Church Inquisitors perish.

Regular combat: (N:8 G:8) Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Imperial shock troops are hardly outgunned. Still, they perish while taking down another band of heretics and their pirate drinking buddies.

Uneasy quiet settles over the research world.

Duke Lortran stands before an assembly of lesser nobles on Sanctuary.  A buzz of conversation goes quiet as the old duke clears his throat.

"Lords and Ladies, by now I am sure you have heard of the attack on Punah, and are wondering I have become a Nitrix.  I assure you, this nuclear attack was a unique event.  With such agents of destruction on our very doorstep, I could not sit back and remain idle.  As it stands, we are very luck that the Countess' forces are not now occupying Hellish, and preparing to attack Lortran at this very moment.

The tools we have used to defeat the Kadesh forces on Punah have done great harm to this world which has been a valued and steadfast ally to House Lortran.  I deeply regret the situation that necessitated such devastation.  And I vow to the people of Punah, our friends and allies, that I shall rebuild that world even better than before.

Very soon I shall lead our forces to reclaim Punah from the remnants of the Countess' forces.  And once there I shall set to work rebuilding Punah.  We shall not only restore it's past glory, but also shall surpass it!  We shall make a memorial to those who died defending Punah, and repelling the Kadesh invaders.  It shall serve as a notice to the other houses, that House Lortran will reclaim what is taken from it, and will become stronger in the processes.  It will send the message that even though we destroy when we are forced to, it is what we build up that makes us house Lortran!"

Lortran jumpships appear above Punah. They land on the ravaged world with no opposition from the Kadesh. The reception the liberators receive is far less elaborate and pompous than One would expect, even with Duke Lortran himself leading the force. A somber tone, mourning the dead and lost, and the damage to the planet, these dominate the proceedings.

The diplomatic efforts of the Church come just a little bit too late. The presence of a Lortran garrison on Punah makes it impossible to annex the planet in that way.

A new noble joins the Nitrix. Roger de la Poer is the twelfth clone of the original Baron de la Poer, and carries the distinction with pride. Being an artificial being, her reasons, gives him all the possible advantages in this cruel arena that is politics.

The Nitrix answer to the Gurati attack takes the form that is to be expected of that House. A pair of jumpships, laden with nuclear weapons, wink into existence above Bolavor.

(OOC: Gurati didn't declare the nuclear arsenal as armed in his orders. The rules specifically state such arsenals are considered SAFE. So, the Gurati nukes don't go off.)

Nuclear phase: The Gurati dampers offer considerable protection to the planet, but even the pair of them are overwhelmed by the concentrated assault. Nitrix nukes blow vast holes into the green foliage of the jungle planet. Firestorms erupt, ancients rainforests are erased, many species of animals and plants cease to exist. Two units of Imperial death squads and an unit of House Guards are unfortunate enough to be caught in the blast area, and perish immediately. The ecology of the planet is mostly destroyed, however. Radiation poisoning, nuclear winter, and mass extinctions of wildlife all follow the Nitrix raid.

Kadesh units reorganize, drawing more and more manpower to the front lines. With the recent losses, their productivity has started lagging behind the other houses. The advantage does not seem to be significant for now, however.

Duke Lortran through construction area, squinting up at the pair of scaffolding-enshrouded statues being erected.  Their likeness to Baroness Carly and Duchess Catherine were questionable at best, but Count Donovan had counselled that monuments in the local style would better improve the strained relations with the Amazonians, and the Duke had (begrudgingly) agreed.  He cringed to think what the slender, business-like Catherine would think of the exaggerated curves and minimal 'armor' on display in her depiction as an Amazonian warrior-queen, but it would be a small price to pay if she were still alive.  And if it helped to regain the trust of the Amazonians, all the better.  He assumed that Baroness Carly, having spent far more time on the pleasure plant, would take the statues 'enhanced' depiction of her as the flattery it was intended to be, though he shuddered to think of what headlines the news feeds with come up with to go along with the images of the statues.  But again, the Duke knew that he would accept a thousand double entendres from the media if it meant Carly were merely a captive, rather than a corpse.

The Imperial sages report:

The Gurati shuffle their forces around in a puzzling manner. It seems the current House leader is playing it safe after burning his fingers on a gamble. However, as we all know, retreat comes just before the fall.

The Lortran spend time refitting the industry of their worlds. There is signifiacnt shuffling of their troops, but no definite move towards a new war.

The Kadesh manage to attract a new noble. Kelly Dacklin needs no great introduction to anyone familiar with the Great Houses. Nevertheless, the risk she takes in participating in the politics of this sector is substantial. Otherwise their troop movements seem uninspired.

A small scale nuclear blast erases Lady Delia Stanthorpe's residence on the Gurati homeworld, together with the said noble and a sizable part of her entourage. Even without sensor traces of Roger de la Poer's private jumpship the assassination had the unmistakable marks of a Nitrix operation. A young boy had been implanted with a tiny fusion device and sent to Lady Stanthorpe as a messenger - a rather typical Nitrix plot. With no nobles remaining to lead House Gurati, their future seems bleak.

Duke Lortran looks down on the festival raging through the city streets with a smile.  The celebration of the completion of the rebuilding of Punah had been going on for thirty hours so far, and showed no signs of slowing.  I do not know if they have fully forgiven the nuclear strike, he thinks, but they certainly seem to appreciate the efforts we have made to atone for it.  Let us hope that this can regain their loyalty...I will certainly need it before these wars are over.  He gazes down from his balcony as the citizens celebrate in the way only the inhabitants of a pleasure world can, and smiles wistfully.  ...oh to be a younger man on a night like this...

The War was not over; she would not allow it to be over. It would continue until the Faith was victorious. Even if she was defeated now, the Crusade would rise again in eras to come. It's what she had to believe; it's what Harrion would have wanted.
