Time poor long time GM here, hoping to kick off a game at some point. First time here on RPoL so I was hoping some kind folks would posting their "The thing I wish someone had told/shown me when I was new" to save me some grief and facekeyboarding? Cheers in advance, and may your dice rolls lead to interesting mayhem.

The Help function is pretty informative - have a look through there for any little tips and tricks. Since every game here is down to however the GM wants to run it, there will be lots of little (and not so little...) differences in how people do things. Check out the "Wanted - Players" and "Wanted - GMs" threads for games to join and games to run, respectively.

Also, welcome to RPOL :).

Don't worry; you're not alone! ;-)

Hit the Help System for certain, and look at the Games help under the GM Menu, Game Access Levels, and Game Groups.  You'll find a lot of powerful tools are available to a GM for organizing campaign and world-building data.

While you're at it, if you intend to run a game with Mature or Adult policies, definitely read up on the Site Policies.  (You might want to do that, anyway.)

There's lots to see and do here, and lots of friendly folks who want to help you have all that fun.

When you think about, post an intro in Beginners if you haven't already, and look at Game Proposals, Input, and Advice.  That's the place to float a proposal and gauge interest for a game concept before you put a lot of work into it.

Like I already said, there's lots to see and do.  May the dice always treat you gently.

So here's a question for you all: what is the expected frequency of posting, especially from a GM? Due to life commitments I have a feeling I'll only be able to manage once a day in the evenings. Is that going to drive folks insane?

Once a day is a good posting rate. Plenty of games around here exist on posting rates of once or twice a week.

All the specifics like that is always gonna be down to the way the GM of any given game likes to run things. Some games manage one or two posts a day, some more than that, while others might plod along at a couple of posts a week or fewer. It depends on people's availability and stuff.

I have no idea what I'm doing!

I run into most folks posting once a weekday and getting out maybe one on the weekend.

Two things,
A) in public forums, swearing is of course off limits. A strange rpol thing though is to replace offending words with "fruit" or kinds of fruit, such as apples, strawberries, etc, usually in bright colors.

B), I'm in some games that update once a week or two, so slow games are possible and feasible.

C)I would suggest recruiting larger groups. Thd biggest reason is because it is common for players to drop out and games fare better when you don't have to search for replacements.

A according to my experience (though some have stated otherwise), larger groups fare better as there is more interaction going on.

Luckily, running large groups is much easier on pbp.
