New to all of this!

Despite living in the 4th largest city in the US, I can't find a TRPG group. So I tried a pbem site without a dice roller. Story time with Mary Sue? No thanks. Then I found an excellent site, excellent built in dice roller, core rules, and easy to use mapmaking tool. Populated by too many kids. Non existent mod support. Roll20? Don't have the time. Last site similar to this one, but last post was 2 months ago. Argh! I would like to do something to fill this void. Can this site help? I'm up for most anything besides romance/erotica. Would love to G.M. here, but the systems I have are older, non-d20 games. I like fantasy, sci-fi, and superheroes the best, and I like games that are 50% roleplaying, 50% combat. HELP!

Welcome home.
You found the right site at last.
We got pretty much everything here and if it's not here then it's in development most likely.
Look around, check the sites, see the Players wanted, Game Masters Wanted and Game Proposals sections. Lots to do, lots to see good base community.

Welcome to the site!  There are plenty of people here who play older systems, so you shouldn't have a problem there.  The only thing that might be lacking, if it's important to you in the first place, is built-in mapping.  But there are plenty of options for posting maps somewhere else and linking them here, so you should be alright.

New to all of this!

Welcome to the best role-playing site I've yet found.

This site doesn't really care what systems you use - that's strictly a GM's business so long as certain niceties about Mature and Adult content are observed.  There are some very old-school GMs and players hereabouts, and a lot who prefer more modern or even Indie games.  It's your call.

Get in the Help System, and do please read the FAQs, especially those concerning proscribed behaviors.  That, and join in Community Chat after you've sat back and read for a while to get the lay of the land.

When you're ready to run a game, you'll find a very adaptable dice roller, easy ways to add external resources to your games, and, all in all, a very powerful and flexible toolkit for the aspiring GM/DM/Referee.

Dig in!

Could you be a touch more specific, please?  What is "this"?

If you're talking about creating and running a game as GM, let me see if I can condense it down to the short version:

Creating a Game:

1.)  The Help Topic for how to start a game is:  Games --> Creating a Game.   There you will find that a registered and verified RPoL user can, by default, create up to five games without any moderator/admin having to grant permission.

Before you create a game, think about the Game Name, its Classification (whether it has Mature or Adult Content or not...), and what alias you as GM want to use within your game.  That's the bare bones needed to create a blank game.

(NOTE:  you do have to be a verified and registered user for at least two weeks before you can request Adult Access.  This is a requirement if you intend to run an Adult Content game.)

2.)  Click "Start your own game" from the Main Menu link to get started.  Note that if you set your game up as a forum (one of the options) it will not have a character database, and any registered, verified RPoL user would be able to post to the forum using their account name (as opposed to a Character Alias).

More details exist in the subtopic:  The RPoL Game Creator, q.v.

Running a Game:

1.)  The Help Topic for this is a subtopic of Games also.  It is the best place to start learning about all the tools in the GM's toolkit.

I'll say this about running a game:  it helps if you have a very definite idea how you want your game organized, what set dressing and other game-related information you want to present to players, and how you will address differences between play-by-post and across-the-table play (e.g., any "house rules" or other deviations from the game system you use.)

I tend to stick to freely available resources for my games where I can, but that's a personal choice.  Almost any genre and system you could think of will be represented here.

A great way to learn your way around is to get with a GM who has a game similar to one you might want to run and request to lurk.  This lets you watch the by-play in that game.  I did this for a while, and found it quite helpful getting started.

Something you will find helpful as a GM is learning how to use RuBB Code and basic HTML tags in your posts (the latter can be used to create links to other places in your game, or to insert graphics into a post).

If I missed the mark please let me know.
