I just found out about this site, and am interested in running a game or two. I'm going to lurk for a bit to get the lay of the land, so to speak, but I'm interested in running Star Trek (any era), post apocalyptic (mostly Morrow Project) and old-school fantasy with The Fantasy Trip. However, I'm going to take it slow at first. I might also look at playing in a game or two, probably Traveller.

I'm 59, male and from Canada. I'm deathly allergic to Class'n'Level games, but love skill-based game systems.

Hi! Welcome to RPoL!

What I'd recommend is lurking a game or two. There's a search function down at the bottom of the screen. Search for a game system you like and see what games are going on. Chances are most of them aren't accepting players, but that doesn't mean you can't submit an RTJ (request to join) and just ask if the GM minds you lurking.

A lot of games you can just go to directly and lurk... read the threads. The problem is that only Group 0 threads will be visible to you that way. Getting the GM to let you lurk should open all the other threads for you.

You can probably ask the GM questions, too, about the various GM tools and tricks of a board, like Groups, Language Groups, Tags, etc.

Welcome, man!  It's great to see a Fantasy Trip aficionado, and it would be excellent to have a non-freeform Star Trek game here.  I've always wanted to try out GURPS Prime Directive, too (not that that would necessarily be your RPG of choice for Trek).

Anyway, it's great to have you!

I've loved TFT ever since it came out in Advanced Melee and Wizard with the main TFT book. I've house-rules it slightly, splitting the stats and increasing the number of points available Each stat has been split into three aspects and the points increased to 100.  Basically the first group of stats is Strength, Agility and Intelligence, the second group is Constitution, Dexterity and Education and the third group is Endurance, Willpower and Perception. You have 33 points to divide between the stats in each group, plus onw bonus point which can be put in any stat in any group. This avoids the old problem of wizards having to look like Conan in order to have a decent amount of endurance to power spells. My house-rules system is called <a href ="http://www.coldnorth.com/owen/game/gloryroad/glory-road.htm">The Glory Road<a> stealing the title from Robert Heinlein's novel. A complete rundown of all the house rules is available on the page. The campaign notes section of the page is for a later campaign I ran, but the world I'm inte4rested is my original TFT campaign on a flat world with several tiers (stolen in concept from Philip Jose farmer's World of Tiers without taking any of his storylines). races available aere Humans in just about any variety, Dwarfs, Elfs, Orcs and Cross-breeds (half Elfes and Half Orcs) - note I'm using the old-fashioned Elfs and Dwarfs rather than the more modern Elves and Dwarves.

In reply to StarMaster (msg # 2):

One thing I'm looking to pick up on is whether there are any hard-n-fast posting formats or is it up to the individual GM. I've got a preferred way of formatting posts from a PBEM game I wan involved in, and would like to stick with it. If needed, I can adapt to an official way of doing things.

Posting format is entirely up to the individual GM.  There's no "standard" or "official" way of doing it.
