New to pbp

Hello.
I'm a veteran gamer of 21 years, this is my first experience with play by post gaming. I was wondering if any body could give me the basics on how this works. I am interested in running games, and playing a few myself.
Thanks in advance.

In reply to TheCaptain (msg # 1):

Welcome aboard.

If you have experience with tabletop RPGs, you already know the basics. A GM devises a story (or sometimes a sandbox setting). Players create characters. Characters do things and things happen. Fun follows.

The difference in PbP is that things happen rather slowly. This is true even when everyone keeps up with the game. Few people actually can post daily, let alone multiple times in a day. People disappear without notice; sometimes they come back after days-weeks-months, sometimes never. GMs sometimes disappear, too.

The up side is that, as GM or player, you never have to make a decision under pressure. There's time to think, research, and deliberate before committing to an action.

That's it mostly, from my pov.

Enjoy!

Another thing.

Rpol is one of the best PbP sites I've ever seen, especially for a GM. In many ways it makes life easier than face-to-face play. The ability to split into simultaneous groups and to send private messages within a post or thread is priceless.
