Blue Wizard Needs Help Badly

Hello everyone, new player here. I'm entirely new and inexperienced/unknowing about system-based RPGs. I've done some freeform RPs before, basically just collaborated group writing really, but I've always been interested.

I'm currently trying to find a real-life group near me that plays Dungeons & Dragons or something similar so I can learn and join in, and thought some online play would be good as well to start with, since I'm a little more experienced with it.

I'm mostly just interested fantasy/adventure roleplaying; I've been reading Forgotten Realms books since I was a little kid but I never did get a chance to try my hand at tabletop gaming.

I'm much more experienced with the writing portion, having been writing for years now. Making characters and stories comes easy for me.

Anyways, I'm interested in joining some Fantasy RPs soon, and plan to look around. If you'd like to help me out and explain some things to me, that would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to the games, and talking to you all soon.

Hey there!  Welcome to RPOL!

It's a fantastic community here, and we're happy to have new people join it.

Some advice: read the "Help" area in the top-right.  Unlike many similar sites, the one here is actually useful and explains most-everything you need to know.

Once you've got a handle on that - wander-down to the 'Wanted - DMs' and 'Wanted - Players' forums.  They're chalk full of everything you could want to play.  If DnD is to be your cup-o-tea, you're going to be fine.  It's popularity here is quite high and there are always new games going.

Alright, so here's a bit of a dumb question; are you typically expected to know/understand a game and it's rules before you try to join? Also, can you not see the posts/progress of a game if you're not a member of it?

Little A little B to both.

Some games are very new-player friendly to systems, some expect you to know them fully.

Same with seeing the story.

Threads can be in different groups - only group 0 is visible to the public.  So, depends upon (mostly) if the game is an adult game or not; since you don't want everything visible.

Also, some games use secret messages, thus you can't see everything until you are part of the game.
