Completely new to content-heavy RP

I have always been interested in LARP and D&D, and I briefly played D&D with a very beginner-friendly crowd when I was very young. I do not know much of the content, but I am willing to learn. Since I do not have much time on my hands to read ALL of the detailed rules, regulations, and basics for most of the games here; I am questioning wether I am suitable at all for this site. It does not look noob friendly at all (from what I browsed today and tonight).

Am I right on this, or is there hope for me to somehow learn through a smalled, beginner-friendly game, where the GM can sort of spoil me by teaching me the basics as we go.

Re: Completely new to content-heavy RP

I would hopefully beg to differ on that notion altogether!

This site may not appear completely 'newb' friendly at first - but that is because of the wide-ranging nature of the games.

Some games are extremely detail-oriented, homebrewed, and quite confounding.  Others are devoid of structured rules altogether.  And, many fall in between.

If you are interested in D&D, there are hundreds of such games being run/played (D&D being one of the more popular games, and with multiple editions.)

If you have an edition in mind: you can go to the 'Wanted - Players' area (it will look like a thread, with lots and lots of advertisement-like posts.)

Or you can go to the 'Browse / Search Games' function at the bottom of the main page (I recommend this.)

-- Some pointers:

Most games that are new-player friendly will likely say-so either in their descriptions or in a thread labeled with these key letters "RTJ" (This means Request to Join.)  This is how those running games indicate what they would like from you when you want to join-up.

----

If you are interested in learning some of the modern versions of D&D, but, don't really want to spend a lot of time and cash on rule books: you can check out the "SRD" (System Reference Document) on google.  Just GOOGLE (or whatever your preferred search engine is): "D&D SRD".

The same can be done with Pathfinder "Pathfinder SRD"

----------

Be sure to ask lots of questions - don't be afraid.  This crowd is pretty friendly and awesome!  And, if you are interested in just getting a feel for games in general: there are many other systems out there besides D&D that take only a few minutes to learn.

Re: Completely new to content-heavy RP

I would also note that GMs prefer (well at least I do) ... prefer imaginative players, who post frequently, and thoughtfully, who take ownership of their characters and breath life into them ... over those players that constantly tell the GM "That's not the intent of that rule".

Currently I am running a great game, and we are teaching all the players AND the GM the system as we go. The nice part of PbP is that you have a few hours or days to look up a rule, figure it out, ask questions of others and THEN go to the die roller ... That's when so player says "WOW ... I've never seen THAT rule applied in THAT manner before" ... Oh well, back to the rules book and more questions and explanations !

For me it's really all in the story and the interactions. That is the important part, not the ROLLs but the ROLES !

In reply to Grimmond (msg # 3):

Thanks for those words of encouragement, I know it will take a while, but hopefully I will learn and have a great time here!

In reply to GamerHandle (msg # 2):

This crowd actually DOES seem friendly! Thanks for that and I will slowly build up the knowledge to play one of those games! Thank you!

Re: Completely new to content-heavy RP

GMing I mean

But I always leave my games open to people who don't know about the systems, as well as people who are experts at them..... and I usually have more problem with the later.

lol

People who know the game too well some times come in with a very very set idea of what there char will be, but it don't fit that particular games rules or setting. That or they use OOC knowledge.

While new players work more with me to make chars that fit harmoniously into the game, the setting, the events in the game, and the story as a whole with a flushed out background and fitting well into the rules.  (the ones that put in the effort that is.) They have no OOC knowledge and the only setting knowledge is knowledge I tell them that "hey this is something your char would know about." Usually as a result of a hidden roll.

Not that vet players can't have such things, it's just it's a lot more common to get that kinda game synergy from a new player.

Re: Completely new to content-heavy RP

You can also post on 'Wanted - GM' to ask for someone to run a game specifically oriented to newbie-teaching.

While DnD is the oldest and best known RPG, there are dozens around and many represented on these boards. If fantasy is your jam, there are a number of systems specifically aimed at that niche that are less complex than Dungeons and Dragons and require less investment in multiple books. Many even have free basic rules.
